as much as i agree, the medias goal is to sell to the general public.
Did anyone find it disconcerting tgat the ABC. And others I suspect told listening ( and terrorists holding innocent people hostage) that 5 people had escaped
" two more have escaped and we suspect they are workers in martin place so they know the exits and where they could escape from the terrorists "
I felt like I was watching listening to movie about how to give the ' bad guys' information.
I'm all for free speech and freedom of information but would have thought a police media scrum on what they should and shouldn't release would have been appropriate until a safe resolution was reached.
Felt like sabotage to me from my listening perspective. Yours? Happy to hear alternative points.

Yeah I get that. Their job. I would have thought our government and police force could ' ask' or legislate if necessary, do not divulge this information right now, it may result jn less innocent people escaping.
Maybe the police did, but I sincerely doubt it
I suspect if the police had it together and had a spokesmen that said what they wanted the terrorists to hear, the fallout from abusing that trust would be massive, and in the long run not selling much to the publuc
As it turns out the media did keep many things quiet at the request of the police but with so many stations tv and radio, trying to out do each other they will always push the boundary. There are also some people who believe in total release of information one of them can be found in an embassy in london![]()
At least Ray Hadley would not put the hostages on air when the nutcase had them ring in. Good on him!

I'm glad I am not the one who has to make the decision about whether to release information and be condemned for giving the perpetrator the publicity he seeks or withholding information and be condemned for not informing the public about what was going on.
No matter which of those options is chosen, over half the population will be critical. (Some people will criticise no matter what, so there will be more than 50% in each case.)
I thought the media did a reasonable job of focussing on what the authorities were doing to keep the public safe rather than just trying to sensationalise events.

My daughter has just returned from overseas and her initial reaction to the media coverage was how calm and under sensationalised it was compared to what she had been seeing in Europe and America.
Well said mate,I thought Melissa Doyle got a bit carried away at times and really tried to pump-up the drama factor. I am fairly sure anybody watching understood the gravity of the situation, without her needless and very obvious statements. I guess its easy for me to say from the comfort of my couch though.
