    Defender under bonnet soundproofing

I have just received an under bonnet soundproofing kit from ebay, paid about 30 pounds for it, for my 110.
I notice that Rimmer Bros in the UK charge about 300 pounds.

It basically consists of shaped cut pieces of foam about 12mm thick, with self adhesive backing.
The other side has been coated with some sort of black paint.

I am wondering if I have been ripped off ie. Is this a proper soundproofing kit, if anyone else has seen or done this how does mine compare to a quality kit?

It does seem to cut a bit of noise down.

    cheers 3LB

It depends what Rimmer Bros include in their kit....

There are 3 basic areas that sound proofing kits cover for the engine bay:

1 - Bonnet. Usually, self adhesive, dense foam pads that stick to the underside of the bonnet between the braces.
2 - Sound deadening mat that sits on top of the rocker cover.
3 - Self adhesive pads that attach to the bulkhead.

£30 sounds about right if it's just option no.1 I'd expect a £300 kit to consist of some (if not all) of the above as well as including soundproofing for the passenger & load space areas too. i.e. complete sound proofing from front to rear.

I fitted a Noisekiller kit which wasn't great quality under the bonnet, so I added some kit from Accustop and cut it to shape. Works well. All Defenders should have it. The bonnet comes off very easily, just raise it vertical and lift, cut the stuff, glue it, replace and done!

or save 50c and luxuriate in the most glorious noise in the world; the sound of a Land Rover diesel heading towards the boonies.

I took the frame out and fitted the deadener as one piece. I don't know how effective it will be. I haven't started it yet. It was very dense, not foam, used for commerical air con sound insulation.
