    Buying a used car - Some examples of the liars, cheats, the lazy and stupid

    Recently I've been in the market for a car for No2 son and I thought I'd pass on some of my recent experiences.

    Numerous cars listed on line with no phone number to call. All you can do is send them an email enquiry. Of the (say) 12 cars I messaged I got replies from maybe 6. Of these 2 were available and the other 2 sold.

    Why don't people take their cars offline when sold? If they are for sale, why not reply. Why advertise a car without your phone number.

    There were a few others I called about but the sellers were too busy to show me the cars. What the!

    Looked at a few other cars after being told that the logbooks showed the required servicing. Perhaps I was misunderstood by these people because when I say I want to see the logbooks what I mean is I want to see the logbooks with the servicing shown within. When I inevitably said "I thought you said the logbooks........" the response was a shrug or a blank look.

    Got onto a nice Grand Vitara but the gent would only talk to me via SMS, which set the alarm bells ringing. Some days later I saw the same car (pink floor matts and same rego) on a different site in a different suburb from a different seller. Called her, left a message, no response at all.

    Saw a nice looking Outback at a dealer about 2 hours from home. Called them, got the spiel and they promised it was as advertised as I didn't want waste their time or mine. Got down there to find the "immaculate" car unroadworthy due to tyres and the windscreen, and the inside looking like someone had had a coffee fight!

    Found another nice Outback online. 98k, one owner, etc. Got the VIN, spent $26 on the report to find the last time the car was registered it had 180k on the clock.

    Then another Outback, one owner, immaculate, 100k on the clock, etc. Here's the SMS trail:

    ME - Hi, is your outback still for sale?

    HIM - Yes it is

    ME - Could you send me the vin please so I can run a carfacts report on it? If it checks out we'll come down tomorrow for an inspection. Cheers

    HIM - The vin is on the carsguide ad it is xxxxxxxxxxxxx thanks for enquiry

    ME - This car was written off last year.

    HIM - Yes had headlight and front bumper damage was repairable

    ME - A lot more that that to be a write off. Not interested.


    Why give me the VIN in the first place?

    Got onto a nice Forester 90 minutes away. Got the VIN, the report, looked good. Drove up there to find a genuine car for sale from a retired couple. Always garaged, serviced every 6 months, logbooks, receipts going back years, etc. Picked up the car the next day.

    These lovely people have given me back some (but not much) faith in people.

    We might have looked at or enquired about ~30 cars. Of these 3 were genuine and as advertised by people who took pride in their cars. The remainder were either crooks, idiots, slovenly or just plain lazy.

    Sigh.........

    Yep.

    When I was selling my RR Classic LSE (woe, the day) but anyway....

    This older bloke rang up and asked me about 1,000 questions about the car.
    Yes the air suspension works, yes the interior is very good, yes all the gadgets work, yes the kms are genuine, yes it runs well, yes the viscous coupling works... etc etc etc.
    Seemingly satisfied he arranged to come and have a look.

    He and his mate turned up and spent HOURS looking over the thing in minute detail.

    I didn't really care, I just left them to it, until they starting pointing out a hairline crack in the paint here, small stone chip there....

    Yes I said its 94 Rangie its now 15 years old and has been used so not always garaged. They tried to get a discount in price for every insignificant issue down to the faded decals on the tailgate !

    Anyway I told them my price and said I wouldn't go less. Then this fella pulls out (what he assumed was) his "ace' card.

    "I've got cancer.. how much discount will you give me?"

    What ? off ! GTFO !
    It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    Report this - there are big fines for odometer tampering.

    Went through all the same BS buying an Outback for my father last month. Also found a nice car only 75K, last report in car facts was 120K. Some investigation revealed he had bought it at auction 3 months ago like that.
    Had another guy in QLD at a very good price, everything checked out and I made an offer conditional on it being as described when I came to pick it up. He accepted, the next day I tried to get hold of him to ensure everthing was OK before I booked my flight, he told me he was going to sell it locally as it was to risky going with me. I offered another $1500 over what the local was paying, he wouldn't accept.
    I came up with a value equation where I allocated a value (positive or negative) to a base value depending on a number of factors including age, kilometers, accessories, logbooks, number of previous owners etc. This was an excellent way to cut through the chaff. In the end I found a really good value car at a dealers, it was the end of the month and the sale had fallen through. It was so cheap I could afford to replace the new chinese tyres with Pirellis and get it serviced and still have plenty left in the budget.

    I actually found dealers to be a lot more responsive than private sellers. Often the dealer was at a similar price, I tried to explain to the private sellers that you can't ask the same price as a dealer, they just didn't get it.

    My father is very happy and loves the car.

    Buying or selling seems that the dick heads are out there in large numbers. Sold a Prado about 3 years ago and got plenty of interest but as soon as I told them I'd be taking licence details they didn't turn up. Or tried to argue with me, or people would park some where then slowly walk past or peer around the van to see the car in the drive.
    But they wouldn't come near the house....
    In the end a bloke turned up on behalf of his BiL in Alice and bought it.....and I'd forgotten to check his licence!!!
    I want to sell the Deafener now but apart from the cook threatening to kill me I dread the types who will turn up.

    1. The reason they don't have phone numbers is they were probably advertised on Car sales or similar as a commercial ad. It stops people going direct to the seller and the site like Car Sales not getting their sale commission.

    2. If they report it as sold they have to pay the site the commission, so by not telling them they are avoiding fees.

    I worked in the Car selling business, the cars were on a floor plan, when the finance company inspectors called to check stock, the sales manager used to make the salesman put paper signs over the number plates of the new cars that were sold, so they didn't charge them for the vehicles.
