Yes. That is what Google tells me.
Other sources tell me you can use US dollars. If I stepped off a plane at the airport, can I use US dollars?

I think greenbacks are valued almost universally, not necessarily official tender though.

Speaking of which, did you want paying in Peruvian coins? Check your email.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

It might be like Switzerland where the shops will take Euros 1 for 1 in place of Swiss francs even though the Euro is worth 20% more. Currency exchange rates are for wimps.

As I said, Mike, I'm after what one can immediately start spending the moment one steps off the plane.

Mate just came back from Argentina and Peru, old farts rugby thing, , USD very popular everywhere.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

If you like to know what it is the best currency to have in Peru or any other South American country then it is the U$S dollar.
In Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and El Salvador also you can use the "funny medicinal grasses"

The big supermarkets and department stores will take dollars as will official taxis. However i would have some Soles for the smaller businesses like smaller cafes etc. The Peruvian economy has been growing and they have a lot of faith in their own currency. Also smaller businesses may not give a good exchange rate.
When i first went there 11 years ago, many big ticket items eg TVs, fridges, cars etc were priced in dollars because the currency fluctuated so much. This is no longer the case.
    Have fun on your trip
    Cheers
    Mike
