The only advantage not fanging around is you look after you engine, mind you cruising at 110 is hardly going to kill your engine. I cruise most places at 110 and then do a trip over the mountains to sydne where the speed limit isnt above 90 till you get to the free way, makes no difference what so ever to fuel economy. I've been reading the thread on off road economy and the 89-96 Disco thread and others that touch on fuel economy. For some reason I enjoy logging economy and like to be anal about getting the best fuel efficiency
When doing the long "transport stages" from Perth to Broome etc for my camping holidays I've stayed on below a 100kph (I thought I was doing 100 but it turned out speedo overreads).
The feeling that comes out of these threads and seems to back up my own experience is that your Tdi is gonna drink around 11l/100km laiden no matter what; at 80kph on good gravel or 100 kph on tarmac or at 60kph around town. A bit more if you have a spare on the bonnet. I'm now wondering if it would have cost me about the same on fuel if I pulled my finger out and did a true 110 and maybe got to some campsites sooner!
I can't be bothered fanging around at 120 but if I don't save anything by going slow should I sit on the speed limit?
