Left turn on red where signposted - yes indeed. It's been that way for as long as I can remember in Sydney. Only just now starting to be introduced in Brisbane.
Was in a discussion with my son tonight about road rules and the USA rule where you can turn right(same as left turn here) against a red light if no traffic is coming.
He said to me that when he was in Sydney about 4 years ago this was the case there.
I suggested that he was wrong as I have been there a few times and don't remember it. So what is the rule?
Dave.
I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Has been this way in Adelaide too for a fair while. Although the only intersection near me that it was permitted at was revoked a number of years ago.

"Turn left at anytime with care" js all over nsw.
I now live in wa and they have talked about bringing this rule in too....but wa drivers are absolutely shocking so I am hoping that they will abandon this idea.
Brett....
Yep, you can turn left against a red light in NSW, provided (as already mentioned above) it is sign posted. I do it but with great caution, you must stop before proceeding.
The difference between the USA and NSW is that in the USA you can turn unless signed otherwise, in NSW you cannot turn unless signed otherwise.

for a short period it was discussed that the rule of Turn left at anytime with care would apply probably mid to late 1980's in NSW. Then it was changed to where sign posted. normally see these at intersections that have been set up so that pedestrians are harder to run overthe reason the rule was abandoned.
was one of the better traffic rules I found in californiato speed up flow in suburbs, I was there in 1986 and we had the idea here.
Few years back there was lot of publicity about new road rules including able to U turn at traffic lights--followed by lots of signage to say you cant U turn at lights in NSW unless it was sign posted--Im convinced someone stuffed up O they wanted to waist money placing extra signs on most traffic lights.
What I don't like about this situation is the vehicle who wants to turn left against a red light triggers the road sensors, he is long gone and the traffic coming the other way still have to stop at a red light for a vehicle that is no longer there. Very frustrating, if you are one of those other vehicles.
OK, PaulineYou are coming to an intersection with traffic lights for example, you come to the lights and there is no traffic coming both left and right. You have a red light and opposite you is a sign that says you can turn to the left against the red light if it is safe to do so.
You proceed and of cause you have triggered the lights to eventually show a red light to all traffic proceeding across the intersection from your right and left. As far as they are concerned, they are facing a red light light with no traffic going the other way.
You, meanwhile have long gone. I hope that jumbled explanation helps.![]()
