Why to people need to drive around blind corners at speed?

Why is it that 4WD's are in a rush to get somewhere on narrow dirt roads?

You would think that during Easter and any other long weekend that there are going to be lots more people in the forests than normal so wouldn't you think that you would approach blind corners with a bit less speed and travel down "your" side of the road even if the road is only wide enough for 1 1/2 cars?

Not so from what I saw today. I nearly had and encounter with a Tojo Troopee around a corner and then further down the road a close encounter with a Tojo Cuzer technically on the wrong side of the road. This all happenend in the space of a couple of k's. After this I approached all corners at even less speed and couldn't wait to get out of there before my luck ran out.

Going up to Noojee tomorrow so I hope I don't see the same driving again (I probably will but I'll be prepared)

    I know how you feel.

I was going to the glow worm tunnels, before i got the landy, i was driving a Ford Escort, as we came along a straight my other half saw something in the bushes, we stopped and when we saw nothing we kept going, as we approached the next corner a massively lifted Cruiser troopy came screaming around a blind corner, on a road that was only two wheel tracks wide in this bit. I veered right very quickly and gave the car a boot full to bring the rear around, if the cruiser hadnt been lifted, we would have colided, as it turned out the front corner of my car just scraped under without a scratch. He we were off the road in the scrub and the bastard just kept going.

A bit further on we came across a collision between a suby wagon and an old merc, the front drivers side corner was ripped of the suby, the mercs bumper was bent. This was in the middle of a blind corner. People just dont think. Matt

Some people just have no sence of adventure, what would you have to talk about if they had not had done it hmmmm.

Speed does not kill!!, death is cause by rapid deceleration trauma cause mainly by suddenly stopping your vehicle without conforming to correct braking procedures.

It is therefore INMHO that Stop signs, traffic lights, give way signs, telegraph poles and trees are largely at fault for magor fatalities on our roads today. I hereby would like to announce the launching of the Council for Thrills. You name it we support it so long as someone gets a kick out of it!!

Very funny Jason, but PCH has a point, some of these city slickers in 4wds, namely beefed up ones, drive like idiots on these one ore less than 2 lane dirt tracks. Its only a matter of time before they kill someone, and give 4wders a bad name in the process. matt

Several years ago now, we went for a leisurely drive into Wombat state forest in Victoria and had a head on collision with some hoons in a toyota LC ute.

We were driving cautiously at about 40km/h, they were doing about 80km/h.

There was about 3 - 4 seconds of locked brakes then Bang.

BTW they had "Danger Zone" from Top Gun blearing.

I am now doubly freaked out by some people's assumption that nothing will be coming the other way.

The reverse principle applies - assume someone is coming :!: :!:

As an Ex road bike rider, I always live by one simple rule. "Everyone on the road is trying to kill me", unfortunatley I took it way too literally and now drive a big V8 4wd with a bullbar and I am ready to retaliate at a moments notice

To many people drive around with their head up there bum. Take Rons sons accident for example, luckily he is ok and will recover, but it could have been avoided if the car driver had taken the time to stop and look. The same can be said for these wallies on outback dirt tracks. They are in such a hurry to get places, but they wont get there quicker when the hit someone. Matt

    G'day All,
I'm an ex-biker too and it's taught me to expect the unexpected! I like driving forest roads at night, much easier to see oncoming vehicles.Off topic but my RR is the first fulltime 4WD I've ever owned, it's brilliant on dirt roads....goes exactly where it's pointed!!! Talk about people driving too fast for the conditions, should have seen the idiots on Stockton yesterday! Easy to see how fatalities occur up there. 8O

    Cheers Scott
