When I was a young lad, my old Irish granny used to bathe in milk a couple of times a year - said it was good for her complexion.

On the due day, she had arranged for the milk'o to come around with extra milk in a couple of big stainless steel churns - she would dress in the appropriate attire and get into the bath, and the milk'o would bring in the churns of milk and pour it into the bath around her.

When making the arrangements for this, the milk'o would ask my granny "do you want the milk pasteurized". Her response was always the same -

"No thank you - just up to my chin will do".

But on topic - I also can't see why "raw milk" is even available for sale these days. As has already been said - it serves no purpose that cannot be met by "safe" product already available.
    Cheers .........

I suspect that in some cases it is because they are the same sort of people who don't want their kids vaccinated.

They accept claims from some anonymous, unqualified person on the internet, but ignore the scientific evidence from qualified sources.

They probably believe it is more nutritious, even though it is not and they believe it is safe even though it is not.

    Milk

Legislating against wrongdoing is one thing trying to legislate against a persons lifestyle choice, belief, or any other moral is a non-starter

The lady selling the milk has done nothing wrong. The product was correctly labelled, even if she drank the product herself, that again is a choice. A similar act for the mother providing the child with the milk. If the product was correctly labelled and knowingly given this is a choice. How do you legislate against people who choose an alternative make everyone out to be an idiot and ban the product. I don't believe so.

Motor vehicles, of which all on this forum are passionate about, kill and injure many thousands of people in Australia alone, worldwide the figure runs into the millions. Do we ban vehicles? We have legislation, in place for all manner of foolish things that people do in Motor Vehicles, does it prevent all the deaths we see on our roads annually?

Legislation can only provide so much, at some point in time we need to be responsible for our actions and choices . Innocent lives lost through the actions or choices of parents or other people is and always will be a tragedy. Laws and legislation will not necessairily prevent these occurances but they do add a level of cost and complexity to the syetem which only serves to make those people writing the legislation or touting it worth feel good. They will not necessairily prevent another occurance, despite what they think.

People have choices and sometimes those choices have consequences. If people took responsibility for their actions and choices and we would not even be discussing this topic

People, they make me laugh, they make me cry but more often than not they make me wonder where on earth did they come from. Seriously.

Spot on. So long as people can be made aware of the consequences, as by warning labels or any other means, it should then be up to them whether they wish to take the risk, regardless of what it is, be it drinking milk, smoking cigarettes or even hang gliding.

Speaking of cigies. Haven't banned them, even though we know that in most cases they will result in death. I guess that if it kills you over time that is ok, but if it kills you quickly it is not.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

These laws won't stop people drinking raw milk if they really want to, they will just have to buy a cow... There is a farmer in SA getting around the rules there by selling shares in his cows.

There was another thread on here about raw milk a while back, and even some sensible people were spouting off untruths like - 'calves cannot survive on pasteurised milk ' (they can quite happily)

And if you ban it this will just send it underground, making it even more dangerous.

More than one child dies in swimming related incidents each year. What should we do? Ban swimming!

Remember what happened when they tried to ban alcohol in America, you know, prohibition.
A very valuable lesson to be learnt there.
