By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Yep, nothing beats living in the bush. We left Melb 15 years ago. We have a dam 10 metres from our house and in spring the the frog noises are like music to us. As well there are lots more birds.

We get city friends come and they complain about the noise.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

We don't live in the bush, as such, but we do have several trees behind our place.
A Tawny Frogmouth is in permanent residence there plus we get visits from Aussie Minors, Rainbow Lorikeets, Corella's, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos (not to keen on them as they can get a bit screechy) and of cause a family of Magpies as well as Kookaburra's.

The Magpies often sit on our outdoor chairs and warble away, sounds great.

We have , for the past couple of years, huge flocks of Major Mitchells around our area and in the trees on our property.
They make a hell of a noise but are as much or more entitled to be here as we are.
They come and go as the tree blossoms do.

The cockies around our place aren't too bad, but when we have our annual holidays camped on the Murray, they are in such huge numbers they can drive us nuts at times.

As for the maggies, I love their call, probably one of the nicest of all the birds IMHO. We do also get kookas but they come and go, love them.

Another one we get from time to time is the Boobook owl. Nothing nicer than drifting off to sleep at night with this sound.
