    Filthy Campsites

I do not know what your feelings are, but for me filthy camp sites is a major irk. As I live in Sydney I try and get out as frequently as possible. Unfortunately that means that many of my weekend trips tend to be in a 3-5 hour band around Sydney. It has been my opinion for a while that many of those camp sites have been gradually getting left in a worse state than before. Rubbish, Toilets trashed, 4wders going off and creating their own tracks for no other reason than.. "we felt like it".

This article over at 4wd action seems to suggest that the problem is not unique to my feelings. I am keen to know what others peoples thoughts are.

As a foot note the last time we went up to Yengo National Park we ended up carting out an additional 6 large garbage bags of rubbish that was not ours. We could have taken an extra 10 if we had the space or the bags. To make matters worse all of the bins at rest stops now seem to have chained down lids.. As I live in a unit with limited bin capacity it is a major pita to do the right thing....

I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here, experience would suggest that unfortunately it is probably our younger 4WDers. I base this on the same situation that occurs around the local 'Maccas' where as soon as they finish their meal (and that's a loose term) then the waste is out of the window onto the ground, and observation shows these tend to be the younger ones (but not exclusive to them).

There are plenty of posts on this site covering the same topic unfortunately.
The same applies to the disgusting toilet streamers that are left around.

LROCWA went to a campsite and found it filthy so did a clean up and put the bags inside a gate and informed the local council, who expressed their thanks, of what they'd done.
Some moron saw them put the bags down and then had the cheek to state on a caravan forum that they'd "just dumped their rubbish everywhere"....

One member who is not backward in coming forward soon put the record straight but no doubt some have still got the impression it was the club dumping rubbish.

The Cook and I were at the Galena bridge site on the Murchison about a year ago and watched the contractor clean up the bins on the southern side but neglect to do the northern bank.
Bins were chockers but that was no excuse for the swarthy types to just chuck their rubbish out the window after scoffing whatever it was.
Contractor was reported to Main Roads who said that it was part of his contract to do both sides.
Wonder if they made him go back and do the job properly?

Agree with your views its a growing problem. I didn't think Yengo had any bins in it? do you know where it where in the NP you were?

On a slightly happier note there has been quite a change on the Nullarbor.

Two years ago any lookout/stopping/pulling off place within a hundred metres or so of the Eyre Hwy was quite filthy, and I tended to blame backpackers as a group (probably because I saw some doing it).

On my current trip it has been quite a contrast with the roadside and stops being generally clean. I do not know who was responsible for the cleanup and the transformation in habits but it has been quite pleasing and they have my appreciation.

Seems to be less backpackers and more cyclists this summer (one benefit of a dropping $AUD ??)

    Agree with you there Uncle.

There are now two Maccas stores in Kalgoorlie ........................... twice the litter.

We recently stopped in at a nice looking little picnic area overlooking a dam in the north of Tassie. Well maintained area with lawn, toilets, and tables / benches. On the first table that we walked to - some feral scum had obviously very recently changed the nappy of their little darling and just left it all there for somebody else to clean up.

These people shouldn't be allowed to breed.
    Cheers .........

We saw this over and over again when we traveled Australia.

Where ever possible we cleaned up as much as we could.

One of my favourite pass times is confronting people when I catch them littering. They almost never have anything to say for themselves. The look on their faces, especially older people, is priceless when I, a guy in their early 20's, confronts them about what they had just done.

One of the places where rubbish made me the angriest was on the Old Telegraph Tack.
There seemed to be no end to the toilet paper littering every site and then there was the beer cans hanging from the trees

The worst spot I saw though was where the telegraph track came back out on the development road after Nolan's Brook. There was a bit of a pull over where everyone stopped to air up and meet up with their friends.
There was a old drum there which had been there for quite a while with rubbish piled on top and all around it. It was obvious that people went "oh look a bin lets get rid of our rubbish" only to find it was just a drum which wasn't even cut open.
Then instead of putting their rubbish back away they just went "oh well it's out now.... might as well just leave it here with the drum"
Sad thing is there is loads of bins a mere 20 mins further down the track at the barge across the Jardine River...

Oh and then there is all the broken bits of car people have strung up at each river crossing with things like
"Robbo and Macka was ere 2014"
    written all over them...
and then there is the old
"we didn't take any chicken tracks but hey look everyone we broke something and got stuck X amount of times. your not 4wding unless you break something at get stuck. ps. Toyotas rule and Nissans are junk"
written all over a t-shirt/broken car parts cable tied to a tree
how can people not see that breaking their car is nothing to brag about... and it just makes the place look like a trashy rubbish dump?

yep one of my pet hates, we used to go camping out at wellington weir for the christmas holidays. we would go out a week before and clean up the place we where going to camp at. it would take me and my 3 boys all day to rake up the broken glass and pick all the rubbish up the previous campers would leave. it was a good thing that i have a tray-back , as it would be full of **** that we would pick up on the way in as well as the camp sight. the last straw was, we spent all day doing it and set up our tents and proceaded to take the said crap to the tip. buy the time we got back which was about a hour our camp was burnt and other campers had taken the spot, when i confronted them they started to ear bash me for leaving our burnt out tents there.!! needless to say, instead of cause'ing a fight we just took there plate numbers and left. but when we returned a few days later it looked as before.! and they where all from the big city of perth. called the rangers to complain and they did'nt want to know , put it in the two hard basket. so now it's day trips only and take a rake and shovel with us to make sure our youngens don't cut themselfs on broken lass. bit long winded but sure gets my hackles up. anyhoot have a happy new year everyone and be safe on the roads

About a year ago I met up with a group of Perth based members of this forum for an overnight camping stay at Wellington Dam (we stayed at the Potters Gorge campsite). I was actually quite impressed with how clean and tidy this area was.

Sad to hear that such a great area is not always treated the same by all visitors.
    Cheers .........
