Let s look at it this way...

theres a few places that offer a discount for AULRO membership. hell I've tried it on at TJM by telling them that I read the ad for 10% off on the AULRO website banner advertiing...

$30 of off a $300 item and hey thats almost 3 years worth of base subscription.

    but from my personal perspective.

if it offloads the time wasters who in the past I've gone out and done one offs for or vehicle inspections for only to never hear from them again then thats worth the pittance that my vendors is worth let alone the one cup of coffee that I could buy with the $11 for stock member ship (and even then, Ive been to places where $11 doesnt even cover a coke)

IF it means that the standard of the people who still frequent the place is on the average raised by seperating out the chaff then all the better, because it means that when the chips are down the people that are more likely to help are more likely to see the call for help. Want some examples....

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-ch...-19-20dec.html
the money and time saved on that alone for parts run by bob10 and the help Jboot put in easily outstrips the petty cash cost of membership. want to guess at what a mechanics offsider is worth for a days work? how about an on demand courrier run on parts? on a saturday no less

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-ch...be-needed.html

the end result of that thread has potentialy saved me an engine by returning the ability to drive to the limits of the EGT and given that I have to drive over 2000K through an area where diesel is over $1.60l by driving on the EGT for economy I'll save the base subscrition money on fuel alone.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/territory-...-jan-15-a.html

Thats saved me at a minimum the hours of walk from the bus depo to the airport or a taxi fare whih last time I did it was about $30. I'll also quite happily wager that into the bargin I'll get a coffee and a nibbly thrown in, maybe even a beer and a feed.

If you want a really cynical perspective on it all (and if you need to read this next bit to sway you then you probably shouldn't be here any way)

discounting the paid jobs Ive negotiated from people on site, Discounting all the camaraderie and entertaining stuff like the funny pics thread (which is worth the fee by itself)

add up all the stuff Ive done for others (feel free to search that up or pm me if your really curious), the outlay for vendor, The time spent researching and posting tech chatter stuff take away things like on the job accommodation beer and food.

That's what its cost me to be here doing this all told.

now add up all the free accomodation IVe had, all the help IVe gotten, the stuff IVe had moved, the favors Ive called.

thats what I gain out of being here.

basic cost vs gain and Im in front, by a long way.

    heres the chase.

its not $11 to access a forum, its a fee to access a barter trade system.

If your opinion is that minimum subscription fee or even the full blown cream of the crop subscription is such that leaving is our loss and not yours then you probbably have confued your ambition and abilities.

Garrycol has been complaining for some time now about the non-LandRover related subjects, discussed on this Forum. While I can see his viewpoint I disagree with his reasoning. As a former Freelander 1 owner I benefited a lot from Garry's expertise on FL1's and am sorry Garry has made the descision to leave.

Sure, there are argumentive Forum members here, but that is life in general, we are all different and I for one tend to move on when a Thread spirals into personal abuse.

As far as I am concerned I have met a lot of nice people here and I think a well rounded Forum should be able to discuss what interests people, other than their ( the Forum's) core subjects.

I'm staying and happy to make a small contribution to the Forum running costs!!!!!

Incs creation has saved me thousands!
Yes, we all contribute with experiences and advice. I consider that even-steven.
Discounts, better priced goods and warning of dodgy operaors, all part of the benefit.
Now it supplements my income buy bringing the majority of business my way. $100 is cheap advertising.

THEN there are the people!! Great people like Dave, Dave, Dave and Dave: Kev Kev and Kelvin and Kelvin and Ian.
Like Blk Dave says, If you have to be convinced.......
    Cheers, BDave.

12+ years of community is worth fighting to preserve imho

not winging and I paid my vendor subscription but as I have several web servers myself and they host many high traffic e-commerce web sites. The actual server and hosting costs should not be more then $200-$300 per month and that would be hosted in Australia and even cheaper in the US. Obviously does not include the site upkeep and any development cost.

Not really economical to purchase server hardware yourself in my eyes

Blknight.aus, remember when we organized the Detroit Truetrac diff group purchase from USA?
How much money people saved with that purchase alone? How many members on other forums out there are prepared to put so much time for the benefit of others?
IMO $11.00 is just nothing not only for the money saved in group purchases, technical advice, help provided by member for those in need but also the many good friends that we gained during the years in AULRO.
Unfortunately for some people that is not have any value

i put thousands upon thousands into the place over the years so i don't think $11 is to much to be asking..

people want access, pay nothing, and still use adblockers to deny any chance of recouping costs and making enough to maintain and grow and expect it to carry on as it did.

sadly you can't have your cake and eat it too forever ...

we are still tweaking where the balance will be but so far there have been way more supporting than deserting.

    cheers
Funny reading about people expecting a free ride simply because they've been getting a free ride. If you don't like the nuffies don't read the General Chat thread. The site has grown and people have worked hard to grow it, plus, the courier service has saved me $100s in the past.

I'm happy to support the people who put their hard earned and not to mention copious amounts of time into this.

I know first hand the work that goes into a website/forum and how difficult it is to monetise what you create enough just to pay the bills, let alone, heaven forbid, make a profit. The whole process steals years from your life and returns (in comparison) very little.

Google in it's greatness (Adsense ) has destroyed any chance of making enough from a website to actually run the website, unless you have ridiculous traffic. It's turned website owners into Serfs.

The idea that a handful of people should donate their time to providing a free resource for people who don't appreciate it enough to give a little (very little) back is hard to fathom but very 'now' it would seem.

Have a bit of pride in what you are part of, put your hands in your pocket and give a little to get a lot

I've been on here a lot the last year,I was house bound when RRV really got hold of me,being able to communicate with like minded people even though it was on a computer made a difference, the money I paid in membership and a hefty donation to another cause was worth every penny. Pat
