There's a lot of sense written here.

The more people who go on about "tight arses" etc - the more I'm going to be less likely to subscribe. It's obviously not the amount but the principle as stated.

I've mentioned elsewhere , I'm confused as to what I can do / cant do. I now understand for example - I cant access the "your posts" bit. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere in the blurb about the changes.

Don't forget, if I'm not on this site , I'm not buying seats from Debruiser for example or anyone else that's got something to sell.

I did run a website for the local community hall - it didn't cost all that much but it was time consuming so I have a little insight into the effort involved.

I like the broad church everyone's welcome type of thing. I'm basically a Landy idiot - with no background in mechanics - I just love the Car - if this website isn't for people like me "tight arse" or not - so be it.

    cheers,

    D

    Dark61,

I totally agree, people calling others names etc. is not helping and certainly is not to be encouraged. I guarantee you that this change has not been taken lightly, there have been months of discussion behind the scenes trying to find the best solution.

I think your comparison with your local community hall site is a little unfair, as I suspect you would not have had as site anywhere near this large and complex, nor would you be likely to have 6500 active users with the storage or bandwidth requirements this site devours. To keep this place running takes a lot of money and a LOT of hours.

Whether to stay or go is a personal choice and I wish people would stop harassing others for their choice.

Everyone is still welcome... without a subscription, you will simply be very limited as to how involved you can be. Your concerns about large numbers leaving I think are likely to be wrong, certainly the early signs are that way. And a very large number of the major contributors to this site have been subscribers of different levels for many years....and nothing changes for them.

I assure you, after 12+ years of building this amazing place, Dave would not risk damaging it in any way if there was a viable alternative. I'd just like to point you to a thread that his daughter posted last night...

subscription prices?? take a moment to read this...

Hopefully that gives some insight as to the level of work and commitment involved and the fact that this place means too much to many people to let it fail.

I hope you decide to stay....

die for sure or live on with a sustainable level of subscriptions that is the task at hand.

have tried the donation drives, the comps with prizes so far none have been sustainable, fun, but not sustainable to the point you can plan upgrades etc based on them.

people complaining they can't use the inbuilt search on a free account i expected but there is a reason for that.

search is what takes the most horsepower, resources and computing time of any function on a system this size.

if i could throttle it so non subscribers could only do 1 search a minute and all subscribers etc every few seconds i would but alas i can't, so that is one of the conveniences hobbled.

all the content is still available to read, non subscribers just have to work a little harder or use the google search feature at the bottom of each page to find that content they are after.

all that anyone is losing is a little convenience the truth be known

if i had to document every little feature that was going to be available or disabled the document would be so large no one would read it, hell, very few read it as it was.

it is what it is, all we can do is try and adapt if the playing field moves more than expected.

thanks for your thoughts and for your support, it is much appreciated.

Well didn't this rattle the hornets nest!!!

I really think it's counter productive to slag off those that felt they wanted to leave. After all, if you are happy with something you tell a friend. Unhappy you tell as many as will listen! Slag someone off and they'll just tell there friends what a crap site it is because people attack you personally. And at the end of it all its still a free country. You don't have to like what everybody has to say, but hay.
I was a member of exploroz many years ago, before I came here. The rubbish sprouted over there got old real fast. I just didn't think it gave value for money and I just let it slip away - quietly. I just worry that some of the 'big' players here will slip away. And the site will suffer. I like it here. I truely believe this is the worlds premier Land Rover site. And in the most part enjoy the read.
Maybe, just maybe charging access is the wrong way to go. Maybe make it compulsory to buy an AULRO sticker and give 12 months FREE access to the site! Ha ha. (Just a little light humour, you all remember humour don't you?)
Come on guys. Let's all just take a little breather..
I'd like to publicly recognise INCs hard work. You have created something world class. Not many of us can say that. Thank you.

.. If I've learned one new thing... met one decent or interesting person... saved myself a few quid... had some chuckles... then for me, the exorbitant co$t of coffee pales into significance.

Besides, his machine makes excellent cappucinos and he puts up with my company, - Bonus !!!

Think of this operation as scraping the barnacles off, the newly streamlined ship AULRO will gain lots of knots for the paying passengers...

I think some of my comments have been misunderstood - but that's my fault for not being as articulate as I would like. So , we all have broad shoulders at the end of the day and the geezers that set this up and have put all the hard work in should be able to do what they want with it. I just feel the soul of it will change, and I'm not sure what the benefit will be.

I'm still trying to get to grips with what I can do and what I cant do. I'll then make a decision.

    Cheers,

    D
