The amount of people caught with alcohol in their systems the morning after a big night out is cause for concern.A bigger cause for concern is the amount of people with illicit drugs in their system. These people are sharing the roads with us.
Good on the police for getting them off the road, the last thing I need is for some drunk/drugged person to run into me.
Brutal hangover for city as drivers fail morning RBT | Newcastle Herald
Just showed my son Kristopher the article, he was shocked at the stupidity of the drives. Noticed the P plates there some green and a red, which should have no alcohol. HE does the right thing and his friends do not drink if they drive. Now he know why I worry about him when he is on the road with the amount of driving he does to work and to uni. If he does drink he doesn't drive until about 12 hours later, and he watches the amount he drinks as well, he might have about 2 to 3 drinks. Now I know why I am getting grey hairs when he is out on the road. He does text me and lets me know what going on, so that's good, many teenagers wouldn't do that.![]()
Some years ago, I used to service the gensets on all the Victorian Booze Buses. It never failed to astonish me the amount of people that get done each week - it used to be a couple of hundred a week and steady. The Senior Seargent I used to get to sign my paper work always had a stack of files on his desk to be signed - he called them 'New Pedestrians'
I once asked him what the best excuse he had heard, and he replied that he never gets over P platers who have been drinking saying 'I didn't think I had had that much to drink' His response to that statement was 'What part of Zero don't you understand?'

It's astonishing isn't it
I've got one red P plater in the house and one that will be on P's later this year...
Pleased to say, so far.... she's been really good about when not to drive.... even walking to work one morning, because the night before was a bit bigger than expected...
It does mean I've been known to be out on the roads at some pretty wild times of the night..... but I figure that's a small price to pay to be sure she is OK and make it easier for her make wise choices...
Plenty of her friends parents simply won't..

Before Kristopher got his license and was going out with friends that where driving. He new not to get into a car that someone has been drinking. He knows he can always call us and we will pick him up, no matter what the time was.![]()
Too add a bit of perspective...
I do not condone drink driving! However, I wonder how many of those 'caught' were 'just' over the limit... .051 for example!
Like most of us, I had a few drinks on NYE but did not overdo it. I actually did not drive yesterday as my other half is tea total but I am pretty certain I would have been well under the limit. However, short of walking down to the cop shop and asking to blow, I would not have known either way.
In most of Europe and many other parts of the world, the limit is .08mg. There is no statistical evidence to indicate that a drivers ability is reduced between .05 and .08mg... but .08 gives the driver a lot more leeway to make sensible decisions and still be under the legal limit. I will not drive after just one beer, simply because I might be just over the limit. In Europe, I have no issues with driving after one or even 2 beers because I know I will not be anywhere near .08... but that would probably put me over .05...
The morning after a non-binge night before. Mmmm, am I ok to drive at 10am?, midday?. 4pm? Its just impossible to answer. So the simple answer is just not to drive! But given a few drinks up to midnight, once again there would be no issue at .08... but deffo a possibility at .05.
I would like the cops to actually publish some data about what 'range' those pulled over actually are. I think that the majority who are caught are probably 'low range' which would have no effect on their ability. In other words, at .08mg they would be ok. Obviously those well over the limit deserve to have the book thrown at them. I believe if we remove the revenue raising element of this and increased the limit to .08, in-line what research has shown and hence adopted as a limit in Europe and many other countries globally, we would end up with a much more balanced and relaxed approach to responsible driving after a drink or to.
I know this debate has been had many times... but Mmmm, ducks for cover now!
Cheers,
Pete :>)
This article also suggests that you are underestimating the degree of impairment at .05 and below.
What's the difference between a blood alcohol level of .08 and .05? | 89.3 KPCC
The National Institutes of Health looked at more than one hundred studies on the subject. It found at .08 percent most people showed significant signs of impairment. But even at .05 percent, some struggled with a simulated driving test. Researchers documented changes in eye movement, visual perception and reaction time. The effects were stronger for sleep deprived and younger drivers.
