Economy.... What have you got and how.

OK. most of us know we get ok economy if its a Diesel, but on a weekend trip i was blown away with what i got.

My old Disco got about 10l/100 and as low as 9l/100km at one stage.

Defender i thought would get about 11-12l/100km as its heavier, bigger and a tissue box hitting a wind tunnel.

OK i left home on Friday at 10am with 1/2 tank heading from Melb to Mildura. Drove to servo and filled it, i filled it to the point i could see Deisel in the filler pipe.
Defender was loaded up fairly well. camping gear, Fridge, Dog, me Wife and Easter Eggs.....yummy.
Topped it up at Charlton and it took 17 litres and i had traveled 240km via the GPS.
Got to Sunny mildura and travelled around over the next few days in and out of town and back to the river. Had a Play in 4WD in the sand and then came home on Monday. Filled again and had travelled 710km since Charlton it took 49 litres.
Drove home and dodged all the caravans and idiots going home at 120kmh...
Filled at Charlton 22 litres for 280km then drove home...
So i average it as this. 88 litres to 1230km. Now that is 7.15l/100km
How in hell did i get that economy???
I drove at about 90-98kmh most of the time and i peaked 105kmh in a 110 zone.
I'm thinking when the Pump was rebult it might have been tuned down a bit as its hard to get the power i had from the disco.

    Mmmm anyone had similar results...

    That is impressive. 8O

I get 11s everywhere, does not seem to move much. With the camper it will go to high 12s, but that is sitting on 100kph.

Funnily enough, the best I have achieved was on Ace's first BBQ (which involved towing) and I averaged 9s 8O :?

Now my LR is used for weekend enjoyment only.

On the current tank I am expecting 850 km for 78 litres. Once got 930 for the same quantity.

The daily commuter is using 20 for every 100 (Commode)

    I'll keep you posted.

sounds like the landy is cheaper to run than the commode :!:

    My fender gets 9.5 - 10l / 100km usually.
Very nice. They got thirstier a bit as they got newer (TD5 uses a bit more like 12-13l.100km i gather)
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Thats good OI, is your the 200 or 300TDi? I have only gotten under 10lt/100km once all the other times it has been between 10 and 12. The last tank was spot on 10, used 70lt and covered 700km. Matt

I've kept fairly careful records of fuel use and for the last 18,500km I've averaged 10.26 L/100km. Not too bad really since it takes a flogging to get anywhere at a reasonable pace.

Your 200tdi Defender will never perform as well as a 200tdi Disco without tweaking, since the Defender engine produces less HP from the factory. Combine that with the aerodynamics of a couple of house bricks...
