Hi guys, thanks for the advice, we are going to hold of on the purchase. We have some other debts to clear up and after the weekend i just spent $800 on tyres for the disco.

I am not ruling out the 1.8L engine, but when we are ready the diesel will probably be more affordable for us. I have noted all the problems and will take all these into account when we think about buying. As pedro said i will never buy a vehicle without the proof of a religious servicing.

Thanks for the help guys. Matt

That 2000 MY will have the later IRD but it won't be going anywhere anyway as it's got the 1.8....

    Go diesel.

what about the 99 model :?[/b][/quote]

Off hand, I can't remember the changeover point. However, if the vehicle has covered a few KM, you can tell by running your hand over the tyres. If you can feel uneven wear in the form of a "step" between the blocks then it's got the old style IRD.

I've stuck a note up on the Freelanderclub e-Group to see if anyone can give me a definitive date.

Here's some info I've dug out on identifying what IRD you've got... (as posted in the Tech section)

    IRD Part numbers.

The original IRD unit was TAG100030... This is the one to avoid. The later version was TAG000020 but this was replaced by TAG000230. Either of these is fine.

    Chassis numbers.

The earlier IRD was for chassis numbers from WA000001. The updated IRD was introduced with the TD4 so that's chassis number 1A000001 onwards.

Absolutley no idea, out of all symptons that have been explained here the only thing that comes close is the fact that my vehicle was made in the right time frame and that I could not turn the wheel while it was in gear (makes no sense to me as I thought while it was in gear I would have buckleys chance of turning it :? ).
reversing is fine, tyre wear is fine.

Ill wait till it goes boom 8O
