Freelander, need help

For, what seems to be a very big problem, i havent heard or read much about it.

If it aint broke dont fix it hey Disco. The best way to solve the problem is to wait till something falls off or explodes, makes diagnosis alot easier. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img] Matt

Even though the 98 99 Freelander drive train problems haven't got visibility in these type of forunms, most of the Freelander specialist seem to know about. A the point about waiting to see if something breaks could be expensive - stealers and specialist price on new IRD is about $2200, new Viscous coupling about $3300 = $5500 is expensive for the sake of learning about the problem (second hand parts $2200) - the problem exists in all 98/99 Freaklanders unless upgraded to a post 2000 IRD.

It will happen sooner or later - forarmed is forwarned

Thats all well and good, but what can I do about it now. As far as anyone has said I just have to wait till it goes boom or trade it in on another car

Updating the new IRD worth it? Is are you better off budgeting for the likely hood of it happening and waiting, or getting in early and replacing it now? Matt

Or simply checking the VC when you do your regular servicing like we all check other things and being aware of the symptoms. I had the symptom of load on the engine when reversing on full lock for over 6 months on over 5,000km - unfortunately for silly me I didn't know about the problem and being new to Freaklanders thought it was normal for them.

So you can undo the problem when you jack it up? Like undoing transmission wind up? Matt

If the problem can be undone by jacking up the rear wheels and releiving the transmission whine, i have no problems buying one, as regular maintenance is something i will do anyway adding one more job wont hurt. Matt

The other thing you might want to bear in mind is that as far as the service schedules go, the IRD is sealed for life. Errr..... :!:

I think you'll find that in this case, "Life" is 3 yrs or so. You'll probably want to change the oil in the IRD at the same time as a major service and add it onto the schedule.

It's a pity but the old IRD is under extra strain due to the design flaw. Even so, there's plenty of old vehicles over here that have covered quite a few miles without problems.

If you're worried and only really use it on the road, you might want to consider removing the rear prop shaft. It'll reduce the strain that the IRD & VC is under and those guys over here that have done it also say that it drives slightly better.
