Anyway ... that's enough rambling Suffice to say we are very happy with our V6 Auto Freelander.

    why not use the seats?

    What do you mean?

This is me You can see why I have problems fitting in some vehicles! (Taken on Duck Ck Rd, a great little track near O'Reillys).

Yeah, it has its moments 8)

My avatar is after a run on a track which mandated low range required. 8) It was up in Mt Mee. We got through

The photos below are from up at Kenilworth a few months ago. We did a few short steep climbs, then a big long descent with lots of humps and the like. Freelander handled it all well, the only dramas being touching on some of the humps (last photo give an idea of their steepness) and I had to rely on the HDC (petrol auto and no low range means no engine braking) a lot, and it was working overtime trying to slow me.

Wheel travel (being IFS and IRS) is not spectacular - as you can see - but the ETC addresses that. Its not a hardcore offroader, but you can have a little fun with it.

I actually really like the idea, but as i said in a previous post, Stacey wont sell her car so i can get another land rover, if the fuel consumption is worse than her cars. The whole idea was to sell her car and get something with good fuel economy because she will be driving to and from bathurst each day to UNI next year. With fuel consumption that high, even though compared to most cars its not to bad, I might have trouble convincing her.

Dion, given someone was driving it, whole didnt have Nigel Mansel's blood flowing through their veins  what do you think would be the best fuel consumption. Are sub 10's possible? Matt

No I would doubt it. The engine seems attuned to drinking a bit, and the aerodynamics are like most Land Rovers 8) The TD4 should easily get sub 10s though. Even on 700km highway runs (admittedly with A/C and some overtaking) I've never got below 10.

I don't drive flat out all the time, but even on weeks where I take it easy it never dips below 12s.

a big motor on the freeways gives you better economy than a small 4cyl revving its balls off.

mads car(4.0l falcon) gives about 350 - 400 kms per tank.
when we went to queensland a few years ago i took it easy and let the power of the engine do all the work instead of kicking down gears and revving.

i kept the revs under 2000 rpm and held the speed limit without any probs at around 110kph. the fuel light came on 750kms.

another time we went to melbourne with the same car(this time no wife and kids) and had to stop three times for fuel plus we had a full tank when we left....so four tanks of fuel to get to melbourne.
(we were only on the road for about six hours if you take out the three half hour fuel stops we made)

so what im getting at is its not the size of the motor that determines economy as much as the way you drive it.
for long distance driving a bigger motor has the power to get up the hills at just above idle. a small motor would have to be kicked down a gear and revved hard to make it. the more you open the throttle the more it will drink.

so......if stacey is going to be doing freeway driving(engine low revs car high speed) you may find it better in a bigger car. dont rush into anything just yet....try doing the trip in different cars and compare the results.

the only way to get fuel economy is to drive sensibly.

attention all V8 owners.....how to save fuel when travelling in convoy...

when stopped at the lights.....quickly hop out and loop your snatch strap to the towbar infront of you.....
this is trickier than it sounds because you have to get out and get the job done and be back in your car before the lights go green....

now if you have timed it right and hook up your strap....just sit back and steer........DO NO TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR while hooked up as this will have a very undesireable effect.

now just sit back and watch your fuel guage....it stops moving!!

Ace, mine gets between 7 and 7.5 litres per 100km, I usually fill up at around 700km (get a bit scared when the needle sits at the bottom for that long) fuel tank is a 59 litre
