I worked at one place in OTC where we had a Fastrand Drum - 90Mb of magnetic storage on a drum about 600mm diameter by 3.6 metres long.

    See http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/univac/fastrand.html

From: http://www.austehc.unimelb.edu.au/tia/561.html - this relates to the unit we had in OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Commission).

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>From the world-wide tenders received, a contract was placed with Univac, who were at that time also providing a similar system for the Canadian Overseas Telecommunications Corporation (COTC). The main features of the system, which was offered to meet virtually all the specified requirements, were the use of large dual computers, one operating in a hot standby mode, message storage facilities in the form of 100 Megatype FASTRAND drum systems, video display units for message entry and format conversion. The latter was a world first for an international telegram system, indeed the only computer message switching system in operation in the world at that time was in New York. While the system used the philosophy developed for the COTC system, the Australian requirements, including the use of video display units, were sufficiently different to require that the system be completely re-designed and the software development work carried out specifically for this system, which was placed in service in February, 1969. Ron you fail to mention you have a lot of info and pics in electronic format to keep owners of classic rangies happy for hours.

They are currently on-line in a secret location  but I'd reckon they'd find a happy home in the projects section (or at the very least the tech threads) of AULRO.

Hi folks, if anyone has any pics that may be of use to this project or of interest for any additional projects, post them in the new project section and Incisor and I will see what can be done with them, won’t you Incisor.
