ignorance generally
Crazy stuff, a young Melbourne bloke who has been missing since mid December ute has been found bogged and abandoned in the SA Desert near Coober Pedy without any sign of him. Below is a link to the full story.
Ute linked to missing man found in desert
Why would anyone try and do this without the right gear and telling someone where you are going?

I understand overseas visitors making these mistakes,,
but are we that dumb as a nation?

Not only ignorance, but we bring up our children carefully protecting them from any possible injury. By the end of their teens they are subconsciously certain that they are invulnerable. Then they get a driving licence and permission to drink alcohol.
This seems to be just a less usual result of this sort of upbringing, helped by the ever increasing urbanisation and city-centredness of Australia (and everywhere else for that matter!).
Of course, there is always the possibility that foul play was involved, but on the face of it, this seems unlikely.

Missing Melbourne man Dane Kowalski's body found in remote South Australia, police believe - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
The body of missing Melbourne man Dane Kowalski is believed to have been found in a search of far north South Australia, police say.
The 27-year-old's car was found abandoned on Wednesday in remote scrubland near the Stuart Highway, about 95 kilometres south-west of Coober Pedy.
Searchers subsequently found what was believed to be the man's body at 12:30pm (AEDT) today.
A statement posted on the Find Dane Facebook page confirmed the man's death.
"We are all absolutely heartbroken and lost," it said.
"Dane was one of a kind and completely irreplaceable."
It said people had never given up hope of finding the man.
"We love you and you will be dearly missed," it said.
"You were our heart and soul. You will never be forgotten."
Mr Kowalski was last seen in Melbourne on December 13 last year before starting a solo drive to Darwin.
Police are providing support to the man's family and friends who travelled to Coober Pedy to help with the search this week.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
This is a strange one in that he never told his best mate of his departure & acted oddly prior to leaving.
This was a recent article about the search for him.
Gone guy: the mysterious case of missing tradie Dane Kowalski
Here is an extract.
Yet Dane didn't even tell Anthony he was going away. And in the days before he left, he told other friends, and his mother, different versions of where he was going. Anthony: "He told his mother he was going to Leongatha [where his father owns a small acreage] and Wilsons Promontory; he told a workmate he was driving up the east coast; he told my mum he was going to Wilsons Prom; he told Daniel [Hudson] he was going to Darwin to go fishing. He told other people he was going away for a week, but when they asked where, he was [evasive]. He told everyone he was going away, except for me."
The bounty hunter will be disappointed..
Every tale is different, and to different people.
The one exception was his 'best mate', - told him nothing at all.
Doesn't sound the least bit like an accident.
Only leaves two choices, 'foul play' or he was not in his usual mental/emotional self.
Painfully sad to 'not' have someone you can confide in when joining the dots points in a dark direction only...
Are YOU 'ok' ?
Seems to me he didnt want anyone to know his real travel plans, very sad to hear of his death . He is a local man and i have seen signs and posters near home saying #
Find dane.

DANE Kowalski, the Melbourne man found dead in the South Australian Outback, left a note saying he was bitten by a snake, his mother claims.
Tragic details have emerged about his fateful final hours alone and helpless in the Outback as the family of the 27-year-old plumber grappled with news of his death after a tireless three-month search.
Mr Kowalski's mother Vera told the Sunday Mail that police found a note near his abandoned ute that said ?I've been bitten by a snake.?
She said the note, written in pencil on a piece of cardboard, was found on a tree near the vehicle. She said early investigations appeared to suggest that her son had become bogged on a sandy desert track 95km south of Coober Pedy.

It is a terrible shame it ended this way but as I said this young man went into the desert under prepared and ultimately he paid the price for it.
Cheers,
Terry
