    Isn't it an inline suppressor/resistor?

I have an older version on my 1948 MM in the HT coil lead.

I think it's a spark gap. Is there continuity through it?

I made some up about 50 years ago from 4 hole buttons. The wire from the distributor went through two holes. The other two holes had a wire to the spark plug thus creating a spark gap. They were fitted at the plugs.

They were great to help reduce oil fouling of the spark plugs. My car at that time used a lot of oil (5 gallons from Brissie to Sydney). Prior to fitting them I'd get less than 50 miles before having to change the plugs. With these fitted, I drove from Bris to Syd without changing plugs.

I have a commercial version out in the garage. It went onto the dizzie centre post.

just looks like a riser, not sure about the suppressor bit as it appears to be only diecast, copper, brass and rubber sleeve for sealing...

but yeah, it is in the socket for the HT lead from the coil

"Beru VES402" is the part number on it and the search engines tell me naught...
