    Melbourne Life

    Hi,

I thought I would post a message on here asking fellow LR enthusiasts who live in Melbourne what they think of it.

I am a tertiary qualified IT professional with 15 years experience and have been having trouble finding work in the Yarra / North East Region.

I've previously tried to steer clear of bigger cities, after growing up on a farm and having plenty of space around me.

If I did move to Melbourne I would like to catch the train or tram to work avoiding driving the car.

There seems to be a lot more opportunities available in the capital cities for a person with my qualifications.

I have even thought about retraining to allow me to stay in a regional / small country town.

I guess its all up in the air at the moment.

I wonder if there are other people on here that have been in a similar experience and could offer any insights into your experiences.

THe biggest issue is you will be competing with indian imports... To put it into perspective 80% of the new guys hired here are indians... They must come in on some sort of visa (dunno if it's 457 or not). They are happy to work for minimum wage. That's what your competing with.

BTW: I have nothing against the imports, there just trying to get on with life like the rest of us. Ballarat has the IBM data center and technology park. They are offshoring everythign they can. I know a guy that worked there for 15years as a programer and he said they were bringing in there indian workforce on visas as it was cheaper than hiring locals

Melbourne bloody horrible..... traffic and people .... urgghh... The city center is abuot 1hour away by fast train if you need to go there for any reason. You can sit on the train on watch the houses locked down like prison with roller shutters, bars on the windows and security doors .... that are covered with "tags" and "graffiti". Apparently the most "livable" city in the world .... Urggghhh....

Yes I understand that a global workforce now is part of my competition.

I don't have anything against this either but I wonder what will happen in the long term, maybe retraining is a good thought.

It's a tricky one and with Chinese investors buying up in Melbourne the property market would be harder to buy into also.

This is why I thought I would post on here, see what others think.

DJ, forgive Mr. DC. He only sees the Western burbs on the way in on the train.
Hmmm.... The IBM centre in the technology park. If you could get a job there I think you would be happy. Rural lifestyle with fine restaurants such as "Catfish".

Actually, thinking of that, if you chose your location with some thought, it would be easy to live in a rural setting and work in Melbourne. I've worked in Melbourne with people who lived in regional centres such as Geelong, Ballarat, Castlemaine and Kew.

Public transport in Melbourne is great as long as you don't use the metropolitan trains.
    Or buses.

CBD units are also reasonably priced. I worked with a fellow who lived in Southbank. All his evenings entertainment was within walking distance.

how about somewhere like bachus marsh .... about 14k's out of melton. on the fast train line. rural ... I have no idea what house prices are like, but it's a nice quaint little town that still feels like a "small town". You could easily live on acreage 5minutes out of the town center. Melton is a "lower average wage" area. Which is good as it means it's has all of the shops an average person needs (rather than stupidly expensive yuppee crap )

The trick is finding work in the city center. If I go down to melbourne for work ... it's at hiedleburg .... nearly 2hours to get there Even if you do the city center in an hour on the fast train. The "stop at all stops" metro train takes for bloody ever to get out there.

    Thanks for your input.

I previously lived and work in Albury/Wodonga. I used to ruin exhaust systems on my ute because the car never quite warmed up on the way to work, because was that close.

The opportunity in the regional just doesn't seem to be there at the moment. Living on a train within the hour of travelling to the Melbourne CBD could be an option.

I think Melbourne and its burbs could be a goer though. Again if you live close to a train station.

So DC do you think IT work for Australians is going to dry up? With your 80% figure?

From where i live the cbd is a 1 hour train ride, and should become quicker if proposed changes become a reality. A neighbour, also an IT professional, commutes daily to the CBD. Under $15 return per day. You can build a pretty good new house for around $400k, town pop. 10(ish)k

Country views about an hour from Melbourne:
    1403 Glenmore Road Bacchus Marsh Vic 3340 - House for Sale #119063715 - realestate.com.au

Would be rather tempting if it was closer to my workplace.

I have worked in the CBD before and travelled to Seymour from Yea by car and then trained into the city. That ends up being a super long day and if I kept it up would kill me off.

So all these places along the way are stops normally.

    What are the proposed changes?
