Thread: Where am I? Competition.

I thought I'd try something a bit different from the usual 'Here's a picture, where is it ?' from a scenery viewpoint to give an opportunity to those perhaps not as widely traveled and to 'mix it up a bit' but am unsure if this is 'fair' or properly in keeping with the thread.

So here's the out of left field 'where am I' or in this case where is my father (the digger on the left).



I'll give no clues at this stage as for someone with a reasonable knowledge of the time all the clues necessary to nail the venue are in the picture.

But in keeping with the traditional theme of this thread here's the 'real' location to identify.



The winner will be the first to identify either location . If you can identify both, you get the blue rosette for 'best in show' .

ps. comments on if this is a reasonable 'variation' will be appreciated.

The terrain looks N.T, and ties in with the era of the photo so my guess to start the ball rolling will be Katherine Gorge.

I've got no real idea of where it may be, but agree it'll probably be in either QLD or NT or perhaps Broome even (hence the woman (?)). An American serviceman as well as our diggers would indicate some kind of air base sharing or hopping between bases, camps etc.
Could be the air base up on the Cape, but I've got no idea of the name of it. If I recall correctly, there's still a lot of stuff left there today. rusting away.

The American is a clue and the woman is waring US Military issue sunnies so possibly connected to him and the kid.

Neither picture Katherine or the gorge but both photos were taken at well known 'tourist spots'. Keep those thoughts going Billy.
