I have never run over a child in my 4X4! And while I sympathise with the parents and families of children who have been killed in road accidents, I really don't feel like I should be made out to be some kind of monster for driving a certain type of vehicle.
This is a debate that has and will be fueld by emotions.
4x4's and the people who drive them are as much at risk of causing harm through negligence as someone driving a Mazda 121.
The media will blow this out of proportion, there will be people who listen to it, and there will be advocacy groups who all write to the government.
If you run over a child in any type of vehicle, you will cause harm.
If the person was driving a delivery van or a Chrysler Voyager, both vehicles equal in size, and lack of vizibility to a 4x4, they would not have recieved as much media attention.
Ignorance and the perception that Rich mum's drive 4x4 vehicles is our common problem.
I'm getting tired of the bored world looking for reasons to ban things based on ignorance and a lack of evidence.
More P platers kill themselves in hot 4's than any other type of vehicle. If those kids were into offroading, there would be a lot more sons in the world today. But nobody wants to take all Ford Lasers off the road!
The answer to this problem is not to find other things that cause harm, it is to make sure the world knows that owning a 4x4 does not make you more dangerous to the population.
How do we do this, we keep our cool, and keep our noses clean, and for goodness sake, drive carefully, especially around children.
This is my rant for the new millenium. Thank you.

130's rule
Amen to that!
Metal is metal is harder than humans, pedestrians should realise that and walk accordingly. Funny how all cars are made of metal, even the v8's that the young invincible outstanding considerate crowd drive, also like the ones with the larger-than-life exhausts...... I'm sure someone wil have the statistics on all this but I reckon it is purely for the sake of whingeing about something that the do-gooders go off against 4x4's, not the amount of people we kill or maim in comparison to other vehicles. We are a pretty sedate lot I think :?: . And not all 4x4's are that big....
Leave us alone to enjoy our passion, as we leave the others alone.
Go 4x4's!!!!
:!: Louis
ACA did this a while ago. They focused on 4wd's the whole story, except when they talked to the NRMA test people. NRMA tests actually found that the VY Commodore is worse for reward vision than a 100 series cruiser. Needless to say ACA spend about 20seconds on that bit and went back to 4wd's. Matt

I'm just glad I moved out of the city.
ok. My View
As i have been involved in the Squashed child twice in my life id like to express my thoughts.
4WD's in surburbia is not always a good thing, most drivers are the fault and turn into a monster behind the wheel. Why cause your big and get outta my way..
i dont want to see them banned, but a restriction to toorak tractrois would not be all that bad. Dont ban all of them, just some need to be looked into.
Toorak tractors with 2" or more lift and 32's are pointless in the city.
OK back to what i know.
1st Squashed kid was one of my school mates in the 80's. My friends father backed over one. Sadly he died. My mates dad never got over it and is scared to drive around schools and public area's, he tends to park out of town and walk in..
2nd case.
Lady who i knew well and she was a customer of mine. Child was placed next to the car ready to be placed in the car in her drive, the phone rang, she ran in and then on the way out jumped in the car and you know the rest. People asked why she left the child un attended ect. There is no excuse and ther eis no answer, Acccidents happen.
While we are banning 4WD's from schools, ban Buses, Trucks, MPV, SUV's and skate boards....
You cant stop it, if it happened once a month then yep its a problem, but when was the last time you heard about a kid getting skittled.
IF THE CHILD/ CHILDREN WERE BEING SUPERVISED!!!
THIS WOULDNT BE A PROBLEM!!!!
I too have hit a kid, he was on a bike that was to big for him,
one that didnt have working brakes!!! i was cleared of any fault, after
the parents tryed to sue me.
the local cop had a chat to the parents and the issue went away.
i was out of pocket $300 in damages, and i couldnt hold the parents
accountable because the child was under the age of 10!
he walked away with cut leg and bruising/ thankfully.
this is one experiance i dont wish on anyone.
its not the car its the events leading up to the incident that need
attention.
I've spent a lot of time looking at safety (it's a little bit of an interest). Children are run over by all sorts of cars, not just 4wd's.
In fact, if I remember the stats, more children are killed in driveways than on the roads as pedestrians.
In the end, people have to be more carefull, but I'm sure that no one actually means to run over their child. I put these things in the category of "$hit happens".
In fact, these accidents form part of the biggest single real cause of road death, plain old inattention. Unfortunately, the government isn't in the slightest bit interested because they can't tax it with cameras
To put it in context (and I'm stuggling to remember the exact figures now) but twice the road toll die of work related causes. 4 times as many die from diabeties. You don't see state governments spending millions running advertising campaigns (no tax in it) and you don't see it in the media (boring).
In fact, if the government and police spent half the time and effort improving roads and driver training than they do on catching people speeding, then I'm sure the stats would tell a different tale
Well, now I've had a spray too

Can't help but agree with all the above. Unfortunately, peopel like Ray Martin and the anti 4x4 lobby don't read anything on this site.
Some of the points raised here are really good regarding the lack of visibility form many of the people movers, and importantly, trade vans etc, but who is our voice?
We are like the fishermen in Vic, we are only ever reactive in our defence, about time we became more proactive in our healthy pass time.
