Top pics steve. You have just reinforced my need to get a snorkel.
Did you work out what was behind the cause of the smoke, nothing to serious i hope. Matt

Hi Steve,
Now that you've had the fender in some reasonable off road situations how would you rate it against your previous disco.
Just wondering what your opinions are as I've gone the opposite way.
Glen.
Mmm Hard one... i never pushed the Disco as Hard.Originally posted by seqfisho

Disco was more refined, but felt like i could break it.
As it had bad ground clearance compared to a Fender even with its 2" lift and 32's, i think it was as good, but it used to rub and belly scrape a little.
The Defender is awsome. It climbs anything as long as you have clearance and traction, articulation is not an issue, where as the Disco was. Look at the photo of me climbing the rock pile at Mt Wellington, it was steep and the rocks were size of Footys. Did it easy... Disco might have struggled there.
Id say end of the day the Defender in Stock form is better off road, comfort is gone but visability i think is better, easy to drive off road.
Disco was refined, smooth and comfortable, very capable with 32's and 2" lift, but still not the Defender.
There is a few pix showwing me climbing a dirt hill and the front LH wheel in the air, Disco would have caught the tyre or something in the articulation.
If you class your 4wding as dirt roads and the odd sand and some tracks rated easy to med, then the disco is the go. But if you are doing Med to Hard to Extreme then i thing the Defender Wins.
Only my Thoughts. Some would think otherwise, but an example is the guys i went out with saw the Disco in the same conditions and said the Defender makes it look easy...
There was a Tree stump about 80cm in hight, i drove up to it and then drove straight up ontop of it. It did not flintch doing it.
Then a Hilux with 32"s had a go, nope we had to pack rocks at the front to get it up. then a Pajero, nope not at all, Navara just did it and then a 73 series SandBruiser did it no prob and a 80 series SandBruiser did it easy as well. Disco would have done it like the fender, but clearance would have caught it out.
Never at any stage did i think i could not go up or down a track in the fender. It did it except falling in the hole on the last crossing, that was my fault as i lined it up wrong. Needless to say i can remeber the Disco on some of those roads and it was scraping and hurting...
Ohh PCH in his D3 choose not to do the end of Mt Wellington as it was rough on the car, i would have thought at D3 would be tougher than a D1or 2. Could be wrong.
But look at in another way. Defenders are classed as the Benchmark for all manufactures to match or better. I have a 4wd buddy in a 80 series that was always asking why is the defender better than anything else? I dont know, but look at the way its built. Chassis is high up out of the way, Body is high, 32's as std, Strong running gear, great articulation. Rest is history. If it was bad LR would have pulled the pin after the County, not let it go another 20 years....
I just thought of something. What is the record for the longest running model with no major change. I know its the VW Beetle, then 2nd is the 240 series Volvo, Landy must be getting close. Some say its mini, but look back from day 1 mini to now, last mini to look like a mini was mid 80's
So Landy defender must have been around since 80's?? or is the 1st coil sprung landy fender shape in the 70's
Were the series 3 1/2 coil or Leaf?
Hey Steve just quietly.....isn't there a bridge off to the left of that crossing?? That crossing looks very familiar to me.
May have saved you some damage.
Dont get me wrong, I would have had a go as well!
Good on ya.

Now Mick we dont like Spoil Sports.....
If you had have been there then i could have said.... "ok only if Mick does it"
The reason i could not use the bridge was..........................it was too high and i'm scared of heights....
Peer Group Presure....
They all said "if a toyota and narva can make it......"
So i did, i'm not upset.... i loved it.... damage can be fixed....
But if you look on the 4WDmonthly site i seem to be the talk of the trip.... its us Landy guys that have to make sure the Toyo guys get to see some real 4wding.....
Now when can i make the LH side match......
I'll have to see what happens with the rock sliders making exersize.
I'm going to make a pair that are Kick ass.....
