Clubs - who have you joined?

Being quite new to this 4WD & Land Rover caper, I am interested in joining a club for a couple of reasons. Firstly, a club membership will lower my Affinity Risk Partners insurance premium (and therefore partly subsidise the membership), but secondly so that myself and my SO can get our heads around what's what.

So, to the question: who has joined which clubs and what were their experiences? The options I am considering are LROCV and VAFWDC (aka 4WD Victoria). LROCV is certainly the more exxy of the two, having a joining fee AND an annual membership totalling some $130 in the first year. VAFWDC have an associate membership for $50 p.a.

Is the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria worth the expense?

It's a pity that AULRO membership doesn't suffice for insurance purposes!

I don't have any personal experience with either club, but both are expensive if you ask me.

I'm a member of the Tamar Valley 4wd club down here (tasmania) and the club is affiliated with all of the right organisations (NFWDC etc), and membership is only $40 a year for a family! That said it is a small club.

Becoming a member of a club is a great idea, and a fantastic way to meet people, and find new tracks, go new places, get training etc. Even if you only do it for a few years if it doesn't suit you, it's worth it. As to which one, i'll leave that to those in your area

MM, I don't think you can join the VAFWDC directly. It is an umbrella organisation of all (AFAIK) clubs.

I am a member of three Vic clubs, and joined the LROCV when I bought the Defender. Within three months the membership paid for itself in discounts and contacts; and bear in mind I already had access to Affinity etc through other club memberships.

There are many, many clubs out there. LROCV is big, old and very Landrover. There are midweek clubs. Hardcore clubs. Softroader clubs. Family clubs. You name it, there's a club. I recommend visiting the VAFWDC's website, choosing a few and seeing how you get on by going to a meeting or two. PM me for any extra info.

Hi Macman, I am a member of the Sydney Branch of the LROC, and even though the membership fee is a bit on the high side, compared to other clubs, i have found it more than worth while, especially for the driver training side of things. Matt

They do allow "associate members" cheap. I have the application and it doesn't demand details of other memberships, but provides access to newsletters and such. This first year I have it I want to get out and do a little bit of everything and to see how my SO likes the 4WD scene before I tip too much of our communal funds into the equation. If she's into it then I'd not be concerned about joining LROCV at not inconsiderable expense for the first year with combined joining fees.

    The discounts sound good though!

I'm in LROCV and like you originally hesitated at the cost.

RMP has already pointed out you do get a lot of this back in savings etc...

One specific that may interest you if you are new to 4x4 is that many clubs, LROCV included, will provide 4x4 training at NO COST to members

My membership is for my family.... meaning that not only can I do the training course... so can my wife. External similar courses cost more than 1 years membership.......really can't go wrong.

As Rob pointed out - there are a lot of different clubs out there.... think about what you use your 4x4 for.... what you want out of it....and look into those clubs that fit those ideas...
