What strange things did you have to do in your line of work?

Mine was to say "I am the telephone technician" in Italian. A we had a lot of market gardens in out area. Vegetable and flower growers. When I knocked on the front door I was usually met by a grandmother dressed in black who did not speak English. . HOWEVER, by addressing her in Italian she thought I was fluent in it and she chatted away until I indicated I didn't understand her. Jim

The Army had we do weird and wonderful things and made it seem normal (as the Army does) but the most "Wha??" moment I had was watching 'Titanic' from the top of a ASLAV in an open air cinema as QRF. Missed the ending when the perimeter was probed. Buggers!

Now I work out how to take kiddies to the point of crying, stop just short and also kick them out of trees! Most of the time they have a harness on

In the SES I was tasking a team to clean out a flooded house at the request of the owner. Complication was, when the team arrived the Tenant had something to say about having all they owned tossed out with no notice by the owner....
    Cheers, BDave.

Tell people where the bus I am driving is going too, because they are too lazy to read the desto board on the front of the bus.

I once helped a mid aged client with impaired vision to select a love-you-long-time lady friend at the shop. He was not allowed to check the 5 ladies out with his hands, well, thats a lie, the shopkeeper wanted more for that service and it was out of his budget.

(just in case you need a good reason to take care of your eyes)

back in the early 70's in w.a. with aust post we had to deliver speeding summons and get a signature on behalf of the w.a. police dept after 3 weeks of abuse from the people we refused to deliver them any more so the police had to do there own dirty work

It's normally difficult to contribute to these sorts of threads given I'm a public servant, but the thing that comes to mind for me was widely reported and continues to be in the public domain

See report at "https://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/cda-cdi2409-pdf-cnt.htm//cdi2409o.pdf" re respiratory illness among passengers on a cruise. I was part of the investigation team. We got taken on a brand new customs vessel at full speed out to meet the Fair Princess, dropped into a tender, and then had to climb up a rope ladder on the side of the cruise ship to get aboard. That was all a new experience for me! We conducted the investigation described in about 36 hours while the ship made its way back to port Sydney where it was to be used as a floating hotel for the worlds media for the Sydney Olympics. The stakes were high in that one. Luckily we got it right and it turned out to be an influenza outbreak.
