Moving out of Sydney to the Central Coast

    Had enough.

Ridiculous rents, ridiculous house prices, too many people, everything expensive.
Having split up with the missus, I figured it's time to move somewhere cheap and save up for my own place.....but it's ridiculous how hard it is to save up enough money to buy a place in Sydney that isn't a 1 bed ****hole.....so I'm off up the cost to join a couple of my mates who made the move last year.

It'll be sad to go; despite being a Pom by birth I've spent most of my adult life on the Lower North Shore, but I'm genuinely excited at being able to live well AND save money and enjoy some fresh air, fishing, kayaking and close proximity to the mud of the Watagans! All I have to do is learn how to put up with commuting to and from work.

    • Are there any Defender owners up there?
    • Any tips on handling life on the peninsula? (Moving to Umina)
    • Any decent pubs?
    • Any places to avoid due to high crime rates?

I've pulled the trigger on a great opportunity and haven't had much of a chance to do loads of research.......so as usual, I come here first!

Sorry to hear about the split, mate. I am a bit further north, but I have a kayak and a defender that don't get used anywhere near enough. I don't know what beer prices are like in the big smoke or on the central coast, but up here a schooner is about $5.50. This makes me more partial to a fridge full of coldies around a campfire. If you're interested, we can organize something once you've settled in.

You do realise moving to Um-In-Ah means you have to knock your two front teeth out, find your sister attractive and learn how to play the Banjo!!!. Pat

Yeah there's a fair few bogans up that way, Pat....but a lot of nice people too. The socio-economic demographic is much lower-end and unemployment is far higher than in Sydney but I don't care about that as long as nobody steals from me. In fact I rather like being among people who aren't so up themselves and keep it all a bit more real.

Cammo - will definitely have to come up for a fire and a few, mate.

Umina is a great area, I don't know about the pubs there, but the Bayview in Woy Woy was a great pub, the Old Woy Woy hotel was my favourite, things may have changed though, worth a look, the Ettalong Hotel is pretty good also, if we went to the Ettalong markets we would have lunch there, not bad.

When we downshifted to Avoca Beach, one of my wife's friends told her "You realise you are moving to the wife beating capital of Australia?"

So far I have resisted the urge but time will tell seeing its only 46 years of marriage .

    We love it here.

Every time I drive to Erina Fair with 1 set of lights on the journey and think about the drive from Mona Vale to Warringah mall on a Saturday which takes about 30-45 minutes vs about 8 to Erina.

You have to work at it to make new friends , so I suggest maybe join the SES or CFA or a local club like tennis or whatever. We are retired so joined Probus and met many people some of whom are now friends, although in Avoca we are still newcomers having been here only 8 years.

    Regards Philip A

That's a really good point Philip,

I was planning on joining or at least supporting the RFS as the new place and my mate's place back onto the bush. SES is a great idea. I was hoping to find a couple of Defender owners up there but maybe that's a stretch.

Pretty soon I'll be buying a kayak and settling into some fishing so I reckon I'll meet plenty of people doing that.

What I need is a rugby club. Dig out the boots and see if they still fit after a few years' break.

Here ya go, I played soccer for Gosford United when I lived in Bateau Bay, a mate played Rugby for Woy Woy, hence why I know the pubs in Woy Woy

Although not really a comp back then, but he did join up to Woy Woy when the team kicked off(pun intended)
