Thread: Freelander diesel vs Forester vs forester GT

If you want to go fast around town and stay on the road - then go Forester GT (XT)

If you want to to drive around down and drive along good tracks then the Forester is fine (does have dual range but is not all that much use)

If you want to drive around down, cruise the highways, go venturing on good tracks and have a fair go at moderate offroad stuff (must understand the limitations) then a TD4 auto would be my choice.

We are really talking about different vehicles but the better all rounder when offroad capability is taken into account is the Freelander - but they are all still softroaders with no real low gears and average to poor ground clearance. Freelander the best here.

Td4 not an option with my budget, only the tdi, and that seems to be plagued by IRD issues, witch I'm not budgeting for either.

We'll see.

I'm with Garrycol on this one,

Did a training day with LROCV on the weekend.... one of the guys brought his TD4 freebie.... 8O 8O 8O 8O

I was absolutely astounded at what it coped with!!.... ground clearance was an issue ... but with care handled nearly everything we went through.


For a vehicle with no low range -WOW.... fantastic bit of gear.

Maybe SWMBO might like one as her next car

I'm an ex Subbie man. I didn't have a Forester but had an 02 Outback H6 and 91 Liberty GX man with the dual range and 3 Imprezas (2 WRX's). The Forester are basically the same mechanicals and floor pan as the Impreza but just a bit more headroom and boot space being a wagon.

I can't comment on the Frebbie capability except what I've read about. If you want trouble free motoring and difficult tracks isn't a prerequisite then go a Subbie. The Forester won't dissappoint. Not sure about load carrying capacity on the Frebbie but the Forester would comfortably carry 2-3 adults and camping gear but wouldn't be comfortable with 4 adults and camping gear. 5 adults on long trips - forget it.

Also the Forester will retain it's value better than the Freebie due to it's popularity and known good build quality.

I will say one thing, the interior holds up much better in the freebie, have been in many foresters and the surface that they use really shows up the scratches.

I am the same, I am a true land rover nut, and when the time comes to replace stacey's car it will most probably be a freelander, i have read about the problems etc, but for some reason i dont really care. Matt
