Thats it. Ive had it. i'm building a full outside rollcage.

Hi all the fellow LR Dudes and Dudetts

Well today i went out on a gentle play with the guys from the 4wdmonthly forum and had a ball.

We left Gembroook at 9am and headed out under the powerlines.
As it has been raining a drop or 2 i thought it might be ok. WRONG it was slippery as heck.

We got 500m into the 1st real track and started winching and working on stratagies. it was wet, slippery and steep. After 2 hours some of us retracked and met up on the other side. That was cool i thought.

I have now sussed out something i thought i knew. Now i know.
When ever i get that gut feeling i'm going to do panel damage or any other damage it happens.

Guess what....
I got that feeling while just driving out to the end of the 1st track. there was 5 of us driving at a nice speed, not fast not slow. it was churned up like porrage, lots of understeer and lots of tail action.
one tail action performance saw me gently clout an embankment. This was on the LH rear quarter.
Did anyone tell us LR were made of Alloy and its really weak??
Well it is. I smacked it in quite nicely and lost the rear rego plate.

So ive done 2 things.
Decided im not going bush until it stops raining, but i will be doing the Family Tour on the Queenys barfdy.
2nd is i'm going to look at a full reshell with a Lepard Tank.

No serously i might make the rocksliders that tad more beefy and add side bars over the rear and front guards, i'll make take offs to the chassis. Then if it steps out i'll just get a bit of the tube smacked instead of the light body panels.

In my 20 odd years of driving ive had more panel misshaps in the past month than the whole 20 years. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So poor old Camila is semi retired for 5 months. That will give me time to do what i need to.

Steve

Its all part of the fun.
I painted my 1st car then on its first run after the paint, rubbed the whole side along a tree
(well it wasn't that funny at the time)

If I can, now I just cut off the parts that bend .
Well I've tried anyway like the sills, quarters and front guards.

I've make some rock sliders and am just waiting for some time to fit them
Mine stick out a bit so could be used as a step aswell.
Still undecided about new cage on Hybrid. It will be 6pt but am wondering on Exo front bars to protect the windscreen.

Bad luck on the damage though

Dave.

Hi Steve, bad luck on the panel damage. I dont care what anyone says, panel damage is bad, not part of the fun. I can handle breakages associated with wear over time but panel damage is a pain in the arse.

Just for the sadists among us do you reckon we could have some photos. Matt

such is life, I have not owned a 4wd yet that has not received some form of damage, even the freelander is showing the scars of a rogue log. The new disco is holding up at the moment, already has scratches though

I will say though you can protect to your hearts content and you will still find that something will get through

Which thread, do you have the same username?

Mate even though its a pain in the arse i always keep my self in good spirits by telling myself, if i didnt want damage or breakage i wouldnt go 4wding, then the thought of not going 4wding makes it all better. Matt

Well just think how much more you'd be upset if you'd bought one with a perfect body to start with! Once nice thing with Rover bodywork is that it doesn't really look much worse with dents, or if you take Dave's lead and chop it.

Oh I hate the body damage - had the Disco for 11 years and have been able to keep the car park dings at bay and have been able to polish out the brush marks out of the paint - the only real damage was when a tree a fell on the car in a car park doing about $8k damage - new paint was nice.

I went up to Mt Coree just west of Canberra on Saturday and driving back along a track you could drive a Commodore along a stick came up from the front wheel and whacked the outside of the front guard - big dent and missing paint - the pits after 11 years - aluminium dents really easily. Bad enough to stand out - probably not bad enought to get fixed - I know what will happen if if I do - knowing my luck next trip it will get wacked again.

Guess that is the joy of using your car as designed - though it would never have worried me if if I had been in my old 1950 series 1.

Murphy's law garry, get it fixed and its the next thing to get whacked. We got a new windscreen in staceys car and on the way home a rock was thrown up by a truck. You know the rest. Matt
