Dont get me wrong, I am definitely a LR enthusiast BUT, you cant beat a big capacity diesel for low end torque, turbo or no turbo.
Also, Japanese build quality is/was definitly better, particularly in the 1980's and 1990's and this is obvious to most people who then equate build quality with reliability and probably rightly so.

Much of the critisism of Land Rovers is definitly unjustified, but so is the one-eyed inability of many Land Rover owners to see the inherent faults..........

actually, i have found most LR and Jeep owners have no illusions about the quality control problems associated with their chosen product and the extra maintenance associated with the brands. Like all makes and models there are faults in all of them, and i find the jap fans way less tolerant than the LR or Jeep fans...

the ones you hear complaining the most about any brand are those that have had a bad experience, whether thru their own stupidity, lack of due diligence or their attitude to the dealer when something did go amiss. BUT like all generalizations there are quite a few exceptions...

I would agree with that, i can quite happily admit that Land Rovers have their faults, we all know they leak oil and the fit and finish of the interior of early discos etc leaves alot to be desired but having said that i am happy with mine. The odd engineering fault like the line from the filter the the lift pump being to short would have been a major problem to a toyota or nissan fan, a problem worthy of bashing the brand. All that was required was some fuel line from pirtek and some hose clamps total repare cost $10 not really a problem in my eyes.

We buy land rovers and put up with their quirks because they are the best out of the box 4wd available, in this respect we can be one eyed because we are right, I dont think the claim that Land Rovers are unreliable is fair a well serviced and maintained 4wd, no matter what the brand will be reliable, now build quality is a different story, but many people confuse build quality with poor reliability. I agree that build quality is not always directly related to reliability, but for the average punter, poor build quality leads to a lack of confidence in the brand. Rival manufacturers capitalise on this and magazine editors dont help.....

I love my Rover but I curse it and the quirks of British engineering frequently.
I always felt my GQ Patrol and all the other Jap 4WD's I owned between Rovers would get me there and back and they did, but for some reason I feel compelled to take half a car worth of spares with me when I go anywhere half remote in the Rover.

For ME it comes down to this - Jap 4WD's are practical and reliable but boring and characterless.

I read an article in the Fin Review today and from memory in a diatribe against British Motoring was a statement that the most revolutionary thing that had happened to the Range Rover in it's first 12 years was the introduction of a four door model

This article started with the announcement of a reproduction by Lamborghini of its first model the "Muira"....as they say "when you are on a good thing stick to it"...classics will always outlast criticism.
