That is ENTIRELY dependent on what you're using it for
They're only illegal if they're mounted in such a manner as it obscures your vision (same as a mobile phone), you're fiddling with it while driving (same as a mobile phone), or you're using it to record a private event, such as on private property and you fail to notify any individuals being recorded.
Even then, I'm fairly certain if you're party to a conversation then you're allowed to record it without the other parties knowledge.
As Muppet said, they are 100% legal to use in every state of Australia for recording public activities which include anything that goes on on the road. He was probably referring to using them to record private situations without consent.
Same rules apply with hand held cameras and even CCTV. I've just installed some cameras at home to keep an eye on the cars out the front (as we have had some unwanted visitors unscrewing number plates and opening up the back of the 101 recently). Spoke to the Police when doing the report for the stolen plates about the cameras and basically I can have them pointing at the road and record anything that goes on up and down the street without issue, I'm just not allowed to point them into back yards or place them where they could record inside someone else's house, etc.
Record on!![]()
