Gramme for gramme fats have more than twice the calories (9/gm) of carbohydrates (4/gm). Energy requirements of the body are provided by carbohydrates and excess carbohydrates are converted into fats for storage, because they are more efficient and stable as storage mediums. Fats consumed in food, unless broken down to carbohydrates and consumed as energy, remain as fats and are stored. (Breaking down fats requires additional energy), carbohydrates consumed in food are used as energy and the excess converted to fat and stored.

Therefore replacing 1/2 cup of full cream milk in your latte and replacing it with 1/2 cup of skim milk will reduce the caloric intake by about 29 calories.
My point is 29 calories are, not worth worrying about especially as many who order their skinny Cap or latte are probably having a sticky bun, choc slice or cake with it. It is about the same as having a diet coke with your fish and chips or Big Mac, the calories in the drink are not the problem. As I said before though it is not always weight loss that starts these daft things, my own mum decided full fat milk is evil and is now buying skimmed, WHY!! Also everyone has decided fat is bad, actually we need some fat in our diet and not all fat is the same. Too much of anything is a problem.

Do you know that the use of skim milk is the main reason that we have Streets Magnum ice-creams. With all the reduction of full cream milk to skim, Dairy Farmers Co.Op (who made the ice cream base for Streets) had an excess of cream so they developed the enhanced cream ice cream base that is used to manufacture Magnum.

In effect the waste product of skim milk has created a new use in the enhanced cream variants of icecream.

BTW: You did realise my post you quoted (caffe latte) was in answer to 85 County's claim skim milk makes you fat.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Yes I did, but you were making a good point too and you went to the trouble to work out the calories which backed up what I was saying. On this chat around the campfire I was adding to your point
Interesting too that silly people drink skinny Latte so we can have ice cream made with extra cream, kind of ironic dont you think I do wonder how many of the same people drinking the skinny Latte also eat the Magnum ice creams??

I love full cream, butter, buttermilk, olive oil - delicious and wholesome all of them in a sensible diet.

When it comes to coffee, it's the crema that counts, not the cream. Cafe doppio all the way for me.

If I want to diet I'll drink water (which I do several times daily). When I want a bought coffee I want the works - double shot of coffee, cream, milk, a dash of caramel - I want it all.

Not sure about coffee and caramel, but the rest I agree with
Coffee needs to be good quality and strong, quite a few times I have returned a double shot Cap as it is watery milk. If I order a double shot I want a double shot especially at 5 bucks a cup! There is a great coffee stall for those here in the far north on the way to Cairns in the park just after the turn for Cairns. I asked for an extra shot he told me in a large coffee he already puts 3 shots did I really want another .. I decided to have it normal and it was amazing, he also uses Jersey milk too maybe that is part of the reason it is a great cup. Actually I am off to a shooting comp tomorrow so it will be a mid morning stop for sure hmmm

Commercial coffee machines have a double shot button next to the single shot button so there's no excuse for it being weak. Of course, a double shot is simply two shots from the same amount of coffee, but its still stronger.

Traditionally a commercial single shot uses half the coffee (7grams) from a single spout, a double shot (14grams) is from a twin spout group handle. Most good cafes now automatically use a double shot in milk coffees.

Yes, the commercial one I've been playing with has a double spout.

But it is not from the same amount of coffee a double shot is double the amount of coffee.
