    about to to buy

After the untimely death of my 80 series cruiser, i have decided to buy a land rover, and im torn between 2. the first is a 92 discovery v8 manual no rwc and the second is a 88 range rover auto with a rwc. I have always loved the look of the old range rovers and i tending to lean towards it, as its an auto and the handbrake can drive it if she needs too. It going to be basicly a weekend toy and not driven daily so not looking to spend a huge amount. any pro's and cons of each and any inherent problems i should keep an eye out for.
    thanks in advance

I don't know much about either of those models but with their ages I suggest you look very carefully before deciding. Why not try for something a bit younger?
Td5 Discos are good performers and the engine is great if it's been looked after.
    Good luck anyway.

As much as i love the rangie i personally would be looking at a 94+ disco, plenty about in V8 auto and some on dual fuel.
Better electrics than the rangie but still simple to work on, interior is much better than the earlier disco's too.

They'll be very similar, what was new in the Rangie of that era was new to the Disco two or three years later. Rust can be an issue, check the floors, particularly above the fuel tank and the top tailgate of the Rangie.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I agree with the other members , 88 Rangie will be well past It's use by date . That's unless you know It's history . I think you will be chasing you tail in repairs . The Disco 2 can be good value , much better then the Disco 1 or Rangie . As you know you take a punt with any second hand vehicle , more so if It's had 3or4 owners . I would like to wish you luck , I hope you make the right choice !!.. Jim ..

Just bought an 88 with history and the thing is great...

The things you need to look for is rust and service history

Do you want to modify it or restore it? Could affect what you buy.
