Anything that can say we are discharging our corporate responsibilities and doing something for the environment will always be good and certainly promote a good image for your company. You can always run that we care about the environment and look what we are doing what are our competitors doing to show they care for the climate and so forth. Its a big thing at the moment to be seen to be proactive with environmental responsibilities.

Ahhh... Corporate governance and social responsibility... the most touchy-feely subject of my MBA. And this is coming from a bloke who majored in HR. Don't know how that occurred given I would have been a model student for Frederick Taylor. Crunch the numbers and work 'em hard I say.

Some years ago there was a survey of 180 cars sold in the USA to measure their environmental footprint from manufacture through to disposal.

Close to the bottom of the list were the then Prius and Honda Hybrids; Mercedes sports cars were about half way down the list, as Merc only use 5 plastics that can be recycled (from memory). The car with the smallest footprint was the Jeep Renegade, as it was just some pressed metal that didn't take a lot of pollution to make or dispose of.

The Land Rover Defender wasn't in the running, but given that a Defender would have double the service life of a Jeep, is aluminium, and hence infinitely recyclable, and uses about half the fuel of a (petrol) Jeep; then the Defender must surely be the worlds most environmentally friendly vehicle! Add to that, that the Defender doesn't need roads, hence no need to damage habitats or alter water tables, this is the car that is at one with the planet.

Given that the Defender is also a very chic' vehicle at the moment, and this is the final year of production, maybe it should be suggested that the company change it's fleet over to Defenders. From an economic point of view, they shouldn't really depreciate either. Maybe even a lawn car park for the execs, to be at one with nature.

Posting this on aulro, you asked for it.

You can get the services of a management company that caters utility expense management services. I know there are companies that provide solutions and will help their clients to proactively manage their energy in the most cost effective way. Hope this would help.

Oh wow. Thank you for the suggestions and advice. We're looking into hiring the services of this company for their energy management solutions but the contracts haven't been signed yet.

I really don't have any background it's just that our partner company has the same issues as yours and that's what they did.

Best way to start is outline the business case to your execs. If you can show first how you will save them money you will win them over pretty quick.

Of course this might not be clean cut. If so you can bolster your arguments with some of the reputational surveying that is out there. Do a Google search or send me a PM and I can point you in the right direction as some of this are PR outfits virtually marketing themselves. From this you will be able to highlight how the companies with the best reputations do better attracting customers etc.

Maybe also show the execs you are trying to get them ahead of the game. Try and find out if there is any data available of what the community in your area is concerned about. I can almost guarantee the environment is up there.

Also Do some desk top research and see if your competitors are doing anything similar. See if this is something you can differentiate yourself with.

Above all just go back to the business case. You need to convince them this is the right thing but as a benefit it will be worth it from a financial perspective as well.
