Problems with bearings in pulley wheel.

hi all. my 94 disco broke down this afternoon and it was caused by the bearings inside the spring loaded fan belt pulley wheel disappearing. Just wondering if this is common or not.

    cheers.

    Hi and welcome matt1,

    More detail please.

    V8, 200Tdi or 300Tdi?

Accessory belt pully bearings don't last forever but are easily fixed and if you catch them in time your Disco will never breakdown.

    Bearings

Bearings disintergrating does happen, I had a VN commodore that did that exact same thing. The bearing inside that pulley is the same as what you got. They are easily replaced. Generally, if one goes, replace the other two a/c pulleys ( The fan is different). You can prise out one the clips that hold the bearing in the hub with a flatbladed screwdriver (Gently- they have to go back in) and then either press the bearing out or using a drift and a suitable lump of wood to support the hub ( Those flanges at the side break easy) hammer out the bearing. Use med emery paper to smooth the inside of the hub and use the old bearing as a drift, gently tap the new bearing in. The bearings themselves are common, their code is on the side of the bearing. CBC and other bearing shops have them for about $8. If you are short of time( and patience), pulley assemblies will cost around $50. AND If you are stuck somewhere, try a Commodore pulley from a wreckers ( I've never tried it - sounds like it might work)

    Good luck

My bearing started making screaming noises, as said above bearings do let go. Were there any noises coming from them before it went?

A new bearing should set you back about $6-10 and if you arent comfortable knocking it out youself a mechanic will charge you stuff all to do it for you, just take the pulley off and take the new bearing and pulley into them. All the pulley's have the same bearing so do all of them if you are worried. Matt
