Well I didn't expect that either , I suppose most other multi car manufactures have been doing this for years . I think It's a bit sad , I would have liked the Defender to stay in the UK looks like It's not to be !!.. Jim

It may still stay in the UK, if it's around at all. The article doesn't say what is going to be made in Austria, just the Author is hoping the Defender is going to be made there because G Wagons are. It very well could be some super supreme limited edition Range Rover. After all it's all the other models that have traded the company into profits.

I think good on the Indians, smart enough to to have the vision, belief, and of course a good wad of cash. And also smart enough to keep Jag and Land Rover's design team and foundations back where it's inspiration was derived. Shame the Poms couldn't get that part together.
I had hopes a new Defender would be electric, but I read recently no electric cars for JLR. Maybe some of that good old english steadiness is still floating around.

Steyr has been owned by the Canadian Magna corp for many years.

Not so long ago Magna were going to buy Opel / Vauxhall off GM. Deal fell through when German government made an offer of millions to GM not to sell.

This is what is made/assembled by Magna Steyr (formally Syeyr-Daimler-Puch)

    Current
    Mercedes-Benz G-Class ? since 1979
    Peugeot RCZ[3] ? since 2010
    Mini Countryman ? since 2010[4]
    Mini Paceman ? since 2012[5]

    Past vehicles
    Voiturette (1904)
    Alpenwagen (1919)
    Puch 500/650/700c/126 (1957-1975)
    Haflinger (1959-1974)
    Pinzgauer (1971?2000)
    Volkswagen Transporter T3 4x4 (1984?1992)
    Volkswagen Golf Country (1990?1991)
    Audi V8L (1990?1994)
Jeep Grand Cherokee ZG, WG, WJ (1994?2004)
    Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210 (1996?2002) (all-wheel-drive)
    Mercedes-Benz M-Class W163 (1999?2002)
    Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 (2003?2006) (all-wheel-drive)
    Saab 9-3 Convertible (2003?2009)
    BMW X3 (2003?2010)
    Chrysler 300C (2005?2010)
    Jeep Grand Cherokee WH (2005?2010)
    Jeep Commander (2006?2010)
Chrysler Voyager (July 2007?December 2007)[citation needed]
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (painted aluminium body) (2009-2014)
    Aston Martin Rapide (2010?2012)

SDP designed and built many 4wd systems for others, like on the G-wagen. Mercedes supplied the drivetrain and interiors (usually from the parts bin of old model sedans)
You can still buy a "Puch" badged G-Wagen in Austria and buy parts directly from Magna-Steyr for it.

How about a "Puch" branded Defender
