Did you know that the first use of the written word or pictures probably in this case was a recipe for beer. I may be wrong but I heard it on a documentary about the Ancient Egyptians. They use to drink beer instead of water whilst building the pyramids, apparently the water made them sick. I am surprised they got the pyramids so straight. I wonder how many work place accidents they had. It was very low in alcohol apparently.

I guess the water was untreated, but distilling the beer killed the bacteria.

Beer is distilled? I think even the low alcohol levels acted as a bactericide. Same reason that beer (or wine) was the preferred drink through most of Europe until the introduction of coffee and tea, that achieved a similar result by boiling the water to make the drink.

Yes, they probably didn't understand about bacteria.

Back then beer was more like a fermented porridge. It was their meal.

I think you can still buy this brew from Castlemaine Brewery

Have you seen the colour of the Nile - who would drink it? It's 6853kms of effluent, dead animals and mud all the way from Sudan. That's why it does such a good job fertilising the adjacent fields when it floods. I'm with the Egyptians - give me beer every time.
