Vaccines are most readily available in the developed world where overpopulation (Contrary to popular perception) is not a problem.
In the underdeveloped world, sadly, population will be managed by the usual means: Famine, Epidemic, Conflict and the inability of the developed wold to mind it's own business, cease exploitation and cease political and ideological interference. Not to mention the damage done by botched damage control.
However despite of, and possibly due to the influence if the developed world, the population of the underdeveloped world continues to increase quite rapidly.
One of the main reasons kids get sick is to trigger the immune system, to protect for the future. Children recover from illness far more easily than adults, as any parent will know. Provided, that is, if they do recover. Whooping cough has seen off quite a few over the years, and will do so again if standards slip.
As I said, getting whooping cough as an adult is no joke, and has been likened to glandular fever in it's ability to debilitate. I would much prefer to have had it as a child, as you did.
