The daughter in law is interested in a VW Transporter (modern Kombi) as a family wagon. They can be AWD, turbo diesel and auto with lots of hard wearing seats to withstand their boys club, and not so bad to park, so it could be a good choice.

You used to be able to pick up a daggy VW for a hundred bucks and make a functional dune buggy out of it by the end of a weekend.
Just to follow up my Kombi picture, I'm told it's valued at $70k. Can't see it myself, but each to their own, I suppose.
Like everything, it's worth what someone is willing to pay.
