Had a apprentice years ago mashed his thumb.I said drill a hole in the nail .He said no way and took of to the Docs who just drilled the nail anyway

Actually, I don't remember doing anything.
I just woke up and it was a bit sore and then it kept getting worse, despite treating with Betadine and Ichthammol. Now taking Amoxycillin.
Dr Charlotte said the bone is close to the surface in the quick of the thumb, so it can more easily get infected.
Its still ruddy painful, I can tell you. I bumped it and nearly fainted with the pain. Hope the antibiotics work quickly.

Hahaha. Sorry, DM, but your photo immediately made me envisage Little Jack Horner's thumb.

A Red Hot darning needle will do the same job without the trauma of attacking the nail with a Pedestal drill with a 1/2" bit. It just burns through the nail leaving a small hole.

A sharp pair of scissors spun on one point. No pressure the weight of the scissors is enough to quickly drill a small hole and instant relief.

One of the first things I tell my workers is that if your are not prepared to put your "appendage" there, don't put your fingers there. Have seen so many stick themselves with a screwdriver or screw-gun (roof screws hurt alot more coming out than going in )
