    Discovery S1 vs S2

I've been trying to work out which petrol auto landrover to buy and have been thinking about late series 1 discoverys, does anyone have an opinion on whether it's worth the extra money to get an S2? I'm a little worried about the added complexity of the new car as I was planning to keep the car pretty much indefinitly and don't want a vehicle that's difficult to maintain when it gets older - any thoughts?

The petrol motors didnt change that much, i doubt the series II v8 would be that much hrader to maintain than the series I, maybe slightly, but nothing you wouldnt be able to handle, they both have computers to run the engine. The only other thing is the addition of traction control and the loss of the CDL. ETC is probably one of the most expensive electronic gizmos to fix when it packs it in. As the others have said the only real difference then is the little bit of extra space you get in the Series II. Matt

We deliberately went for a S1 Disco for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, I think by now a 93 Disco has depreciated pretty much all it can based on a good condition overall. Secondly, something in equal condition but a S2 was going to cost near twice as much. Thirdly, it is pre-ABS, pre-air suspension, pre-traction control - really the last of the few-as-possible-gizmo Rovers with a full mechanical driveline. We want this one to be a long termer also and something that we can afford to keep going. I know that might be a self contradictory statement sometime in the future, but it will be easier for us to look after well having spent just over 12K getting it in the first place with some to spare, than putting a similarly well cared for S2 on finance AND having to cope with wahtever breaks or needs servicing. We knew there was a storage space issue on the S1, but it was not going to be worth the extra.

We were rolling down the Calder yesterday having come from Wombat and Trentham in our muddy, comfortable, smooth, competent 93 Discovery that owes us about 12K (and counting!) and we were passed by a new Lexus V8 Cruiser. I turned and said to Shay "we got an awful lot for not much didn't we". The way we figured it, for that Lexus we could have had 7+ Disco's like ours! And the way we see it, while an S2 Disco would be nice, it's not 2 times as nice as the S1.

Two completely differant cars no point in comparing them as the only similarity is the shape, the SII has more room, more electonics, the TD5 is a much better engine and the new V8s are differant to the older SIs they are the newer 4.0ltr V8 with alot more electronics looking after the engine.

If you want simplicity then the late model TDi is the best of the SI Discos a very good and reliable car, if your looking at the SII then the later the better from late 2000 build date on, the early SII had some teathing problems.

Thanks everyone, so from reading the above the main difference between the petrol versions is size then? I was already leaning towards the S1 because it's smaller and like macman says spedning twice the money doesn't seem to buy twice the car.

I think it really depends how you plan to use the truck.

Have you driven both?... As Baz says - they are TOTALLY different vehicles to drive.

If you want as simple as possible series 1 is the obvious winner - an early one at that.

If you plan to drive it a lot in town - I'd suspect you'll find the series 2 much more drivable around town.

If you need space - like I did - series 2 is the only answer . I started looking to buy a Series 1.... now I drive a V8 series 2.

Off road - well I think they are neck and neck... I have traction control - but no Centre diff lock. - Hasn't stopped me yet - and I can easily add the diff lock kit..

But as others have mentioned - think carefully about the V8. If I bought another one today it would be diesel.

I'd suggest you drive several of each... think about how you plan to use it - not just the off road bit.

You are right a Series 2 is not worth Twice a series 1.... but there are some bloody cheap V8 series 2's around ( due to fuel prices and their amazing fuel economy :? )..For Half their price you would struggle to get a VERY early series 1.... and as a comparison.... well - like I said Drive them.

    Just my thoughts...

Bytemrk, Can I ask why you say the series 2 is more driveable around town? My wife is going to need to drive the car and doesn't have a lot of driving experience so if they're easier to drive that would be a plus. I agree that I should just drive them but unfortunately I'm working overseas and when I get back will only have about a week to find a car so I want to find out as much as possible before i get back to australia. Have decided on the v8 as they seem to be sold at a discount because of their fuel consumption and we don't do much mileage so I doubt we'd ever save enough in fuel to pay for the extra cost of purchasing and maintaining a diesel. The car would mostly be used on the highway and offroad on moreton, fraser and double island point.
