Unfortunately young people tend to think themselves indestructibleand that they won't get hurt.
It's a hard lesson for them to learn - I doubt even upbringing can have much impact on it.
Its been over a week now when our hills community lost 3 young people in a horrific crash, the 18 yr old P plate driver and 3 mates in a car alleged to be speeding on a gravel road ran into a tree, killing himself and 2 other young girls, his mate survived some how and walked away from it.
The local paper has been reporting on it over the last 2 weeks.
I can understand the loss and grieving and how tragic it is, but It just amazes me why it has has not been reported as a warning to other young people in the community that 2 of these deaths could have been avoided straight away.
If the youths followed the law about the amount of passengers this young driver was legally allow to carry with him in his car.
2 young people would still be alive
It should be stressed to young people that the law is there for their own protection, as multiple young people killed in vehicle accidents is high in the statistics.

Tragic, and unfortunately nothing new. My Wife's brother was killed doing stupid **** in a car when he was 19 - that was 30 years ago. As mentioned, the young think it won't happen to them - I was the same at that age, and I dare say that most here would say the same, but most of us get away with it and live to tell the tale.
I doubt there is anything you can do to make them slow down or take heed - a lot has been tried, and a lot has failed.
Just a sad part of life's rich tapestry.

A tragedy! No other description but, I don't think you can change human nature. Young people are young people.
Why are young people still smoking, binge drinking, taking drugs etc when it's heavily advertised that the consequences are deadly.
I look back & think of the things that my mates & I did & we know we're all lucky to still be alive.
I don't think anyone's got the means to control adolescent hormones at the moment & should anyone have that power?

It seems to me that most P platers are on a mission to lose their licence, in the shortest possible time.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
It's such a sad thing when kids die before their parents. The knock on effects are is hard to, heal, prevent and measure.
I think no matter how much money or education they chuck at it, cars, speed, alcohol, drugs, are all part of growing up.
I know when I was 10, 5 lads from the next teen group all died in the one car crash. All from the same neighbourhood so it was devastating for many. The blokes down the road who were in my age group, when we all got licences had a rule amongst themselves drunkest drives. Their were 5 of them regularly in a Celica that slowly went from smick to stuffed. I have no idea how they didn't die or kill someone. I did my own dumb stuff, so I'm not immune.
Its terrible and I fear my owns kids passage through their teens and young adulthood. But it's also part of parent hood I guess. Just keep talking, just keep reassuring it's OK to say no, just keep being a mate or listening ear.

From a science programme I saw the brain, until into the 20s, does not process risk properly, so the young take much greater risks. If that is true then it doesn't matter what they are shown, the hardwiring means this type of tragedy is going to occur.
Simon I saw that show as well, lucky any of us get to be older than 25 really.
If all cars we all wheel drive. perhaps had a top speed of 80, delayed or controlled acceleration, ABS, traction, stability, 10 air bags, and those sensor that apply brakes if you are X from X. No phone connection except for navigation, probably no radio, or cup holders, and does not start if its overladed; than just maybe the toll would come down. But very few would accept such a model, no government would dare to tell a manufacturer unless it's like that, than your car is illegal in Australia.

That won't change much, they'll just hold the excelerator flat everywhere and make a game of it, like hold it flat and see if it's brakes before you hit a brick wall, or hold flatout through a set of corners.
Kids will always find a way to take things to the edge, I know I did when I was young and stupid, I too saw that program and like you guys, amazing that I got to 25 let alone 59, actually I'm amazed I got to 20
Teenagers, only listen to teenagers.
