Hi Guys
My son is looking at getting into the mines. He is an experienced directional driller, can handle an excavator and has a HR license. Very bright and capable 23 year old who thrives on hard work. No real ties, just looking for a break. can anyone on here advise where he may start to look for an opportunity?
PS while not a Land rover man he has rescued me a few times so his heart is in the right place!![]()

I've got 2 mates that work FIFO and have done for over 5 years who are both coming to the ends of their contracts and have been unable to secure a new one from FNQ right across to WA, so all the best to him, but it's not as easy as it was a few years back.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Suggest that your son register with some of the relevant labour hire companies that service the mining sector. I have heard locally that exploration is picking up again, particularly in gold mining (though there still seems to be plenty of drill rigs parked up around Kalgoorlie).
Some skills / trades seem to be in more demand than others. A mate of mine is the general manager of a labour hire / recruitment company. He has been looking for an experienced diesel fitter / heavy duty mechanic for a field service position for one of his Kalgoorlie based clients for a while now with little success. Has been asking if my young bloke (who is a diesel fitter) if he is interested in the position or knows of anyone else suitable. But according to the young bloke, all of the "good" diesel fitters have site based positions on a good roster and good pay, and there's little interest at the moment in town based "field service" type positions.
There's a few new mines opening up over here at the moment (or old ones re-opening under new ownership). Iron ore is buggered and nickel is struggling, but gold and a couple of others are doing better. I've recently been working on a titanium project that might turn into something worthwhile in the not too distant future - and it's only a matter of time now before at least a couple of uranium mines open up over this way.
Cheers .........

I second that get onto a labour company.
If he is good, word of mouth will keep in in a job
