Once again we are in a bit of trouble at work for roadside clearing,we were dobbed in by a greenie.Damned if you do damned if you dont.
Any trees 10 years or older cant be removed without a permit. We can prune these trees for mainence, but we cant break the limbs off with the hook on the excavator anymore, also a big no no.We have a mulcher head for the excavator, however its slow and leaves grooves in the limb wich is outside the guidlines too, they want a neat cut.
That means a man in a cherrypicker with a chainsaw, slow, dangerous, even if its just to put a neat cut where the mulcher ground the limb off.
The works supervisor got onto a bit of forrestry gear that will do the job. This is aussie designed, built in italy, the germans got the first 150 of them, ours will be the first in australia, takes 45 days to build. The mob are sending it to us to demo, they gaurantee it will easilly do our work,if its not suitable we only need to transport it to their eastern states base. From what we see in the video it will up our production immensly, and we will be complying with clearing laws.We have a large CASE loader with a rake and grabs that carts limbs away already, the one ordered has a 600mm cut.

Nothing is new under the sun.
I saw machines like this being used in APPMs plantation in Eastern Victoria in about 1980.
It was mounted on a tractor and cut off the tree , then stripped all the bark and branches by loosely holding the tree and letting it fall through the jaws or more accurately , holding the tree upright and then running the jaws down the tree.
This was in pine plantations.

How does the cost compare with a bloke with a chainsaw on a cherry picker?
No comparison. The machine is $50000,we already have the excavator. We have 10s of thousands of trees that are a serious issue on most roads. All our back roads are now open to road trains providing they are servicing a farm on that road, trouble is on many roads the trucks are having to prune the limbs, and dont they half complain.Making roads safe for schoolbus runs/roadtrains is a big part of our annual works programme, most of the roads were built when farmers had 6 tonne single axle trucks and havent been maintained.Just have to find the most effecient way of doing it whilst not crossing the line with the government regs.
One of our trucks had a near miss today on the road where we have been forced to stop clearing, our truck was doing 50kmh with the oversize loader on the float. An elderly D series farmers truck came the other way at speed, hit the brakes locking the rear wheels and somehow not hitting our truck, the skidmarks on the road were impressive,I bet his white Y fronts would match or even go better.Funnily enough, our driver thinks it was one of the tree lovers on that road.

Andy, how do you tell if ithe tree is under or over 10 years old? Do you cut it down, count the rings and apologise to the greenie if it's 11...?![]()
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Funny you mention that. When we were in strife last time the works crew had to do a days course run by the governments roadside conservation mob. There was a section on estimating the age of trees. One of our blokes said exactly that,we count the rings after we cut it down.OOPS wrong answer

and so....secateurs.....I have two pairs , one anvil and one bypass.
they live in a small container of oil, which stops any corrosion from sap etc and the edge seems to stay on the cutter for ages.....I mean years.
