The brave new world is starting.
The NSW Government is starting a trial of trucks communicating with traffic lights to hold on green if a truck is near.
Pennant Hills Rd is one of the test areas.
I wonder what the unintended consequences will be?
Seeing you sometimes see up to 5 trucks in convoy along there , it could be a long wait to enter Pennant Hills Rd for the Burghers of the North Shore to take darling to school.

[QUOTE=bee utey;2812660]Yes but it's always been this way, and most people aren't able to make rational split second decisions either. So long as autonomous cars are better than the inexperienced, the stupid, the angry, the tired, the arrogant, the stoned, the drunk, the ancient, the diabetic, the suddenly deceased drivers etc, then they will be of overall benefit to road safety.[/QUOTE
Regarding the benefit to road safety, I don't think people have thought this through. Say the auto-car is driving along and "sees" 2 clowns, kids, cyclists, (take your pick) in it's lane, decides to take evasive action, but the on coming lane has a school bus in it, so it swerves off the road, hits a tree killing the driver, based on minimum harm programming! I don't think people are going to pay for a car that is designed to kill them, in the interests of minimising road traffic deaths!
I'm sure that AV programming will be customised to suit the owner of the vehicle, once it becomes popular. Anyway, swerving right off the road into a convenient tree isn't a likely solution to this problem. Driving to the conditions (like the best human drivers do) is a better survival tactic.
One autonomous expert said they probably wont make complex ethical decisions, they will probably just brake hard. So expect to possibly run over the kids, etc, and get rammed up the rear by any following car.
If you were in a scenario where you were avoiding braking, maybe even accelerating, because that would see you avoiding an accident, be prepared for the autonomous systems ramming the brakes on, and thus you have an accident.
Similar to how ABS brakes can cause you to have an accident because it makes you take too long to stop on dirt.
Glad I'll be pushing up Sturt Desert Peas by that time!
