They have been pointed in that direction for more than a decade.

I suspect that the percentage of the population who enjoy off road driving is smaller than you think. Being "chauffeur driven" is a common choice. I spoke to a woman the other day who with her hubby went to Dubai on holiday and "did" extreme off road driving. As passengers. I've certainly carried my share of passengers who had no desire to take the wheel. I'm quite sure they'd have no qualms being driven around by a suitably clever machine. Even now there are people who prefer to drive off road vehicles with autos, ABS, HDC, and all sorts of other electronic whizzery, only having steering input to master going down hill. Purists of course wouldn't venture off road with anything more complex than a topless series Landy on unboosted drum brakes, and love every white knuckle second of it.

Releasing partly autonomous vehicles onto the market so early is just dumb. Unless a driver is paying 100% attention to driving, they will have little hope of ‘intervening’ when the vehicle doesn’t do as expected in autonomous mode.
Autonomous vehicles of all kinds should be banned until they are proven to be safe and drivers licences have updated with at least a compulsory short course.

Should you even need a licence if the vehicle is autonomous? Sorts of defeats the purpose IMO. When they are truly autonomous there shouldn’t even be a steering wheel, pedals or anything, just a TV screen and a recliner or 2. Autonomous Vehicles. Sing out when that happens, I’ll be straight down to the dealers with my hard earn’t.

This is how it will be: You will select your destination and the time at which you wish to arrive. you will then be advised of a pick up time. At the pick up time you will climb into your pod, which will have all the comforts and entertainment you can fit into its predetermined size and shape. The autonomous vehicle will then come and pick you up, in much the same way as your garbage is collected today, and drop your pod, and you of course, at your destination.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
