    Vital research. ......not

We all should be thankful that there are those that are willing to do this vital research. How else could we have learned of such important information? There is a news article in the Sunday Herald Sun that should not have been buried in the back pages, but at least second page at least. There has been scientific research and study that has found that those that wear watches are more punctual than those that do not wear a watch. I was stunned to learn of this relivation as I know those that read this will be to. It is heartening to see our taxes being used in such needed research. They also found that those with watches tended to be more concensious in relation to keeping appointments.

The people who did the research can now say that they have proved that this is so.

Maybe it isn't quite as pointless as may first appear.

In case anyone assumed that the study proved that if you know what time it is you will be more punctual, note this last sentence from the Daily Mail report.

Almost all of those studied owned a mobile phone, which would allow them to tell the time, yet half still wore a watch and it was these people who were more conscientious.
People with mobile phones have no problem knowing what time it is. It seems there are people who know what time it is, but are still not punctual.

On a vaguely related matter, I heard an interesting observation recently from an elderly acquaintance. He explained that the reason he had taken to wearing a pocket watch instead of a wristwatch was because it made him more conscious of what the time was.

He said that with a wristwatch, he found that he glanced at the watch, probably noted the time, but almost immediately became unaware of what time it was.

He found that the deliberate effort involved in checking the time with a pocket watch reduced that tendency to forget the time almost immediately. He thought that maybe the effort invested in checking the time with the pocket watch as opposed to the almost instinctive glance at the wristwatch helped fix the time more permanently in his memory.

If others had the same experience as he did, then the people who had to get their phone out of their pocket or handbag, or take it away from their ear, should be more conscious of the time and aware of the time for longer than those who merely glanced at their wristwatch.

I think that research actually raises some interesting questions. Why do people who can very quickly and easily learn the time by looking at their mobile phone not place the same importance on punctuality as those who wear a wristwatch?

I remember someone telling me while I was at uni that some funding had been approved at their parent uni for working out why Guinness bubbles went down not up. I always thought that had a touch of genius about it for a research topic if it actually turned out to be true!

I wish they would waste some money doing research on unnecessary mobile phone use, too many brain dead zombies walking the footpaths
