There may be some good news about this incident.
I camped at Bendeela the weekend before last, just before Australia Day. Since that is during the peak season, the bottom camping area was open, there were a lot of campers, and security was very heavy.
As I drove in, even though it is free camping, details of my driver's licence were recorded by one of the four or five NPWS people. Several times each day and well into the night security people drove slowly around the entire campground.
Someone from my group said on Sunday morning that the reason the very noisy group camped next to us had suddenly quietened down long after the time specified for turning off radios was because the security people had spoken to them.
On a purpose built tower near the top toilet block, there were several security cameras.
I don't know what the level of security will be now that the peak season is over.
Anyway the good news is that they seem to have caught the people responsible for the wombats' deaths. I asked the NPWS guy at the gate if they had been caught and he said that they had and that information about that had not yet been made public.
I hope what he told me was correct.
