Out of the Disco and Off the bike! Marathon

Know some of you boys hate bike riders, those in that boat might be sad I have another bad habit you might hate even more- Marathons all those roads closed for foot traffic!

Kids and my wife ran their first mini marathon ok it was about 3.5km over Sydney Harbor Bridge. Girls were about 10 minutes behind the boys with all enjoying the views of Sydney Harbor Bridge. Wife and Mr 16 got inspired running over the Bridge so they climbed to the top of it the next day.

I ran over the bridge, later I ran under it and then back under it again - clearly I like the bridge as well! My official time is just sub 3.30 which is a PB for me. Net time 3.26 but still to work out what that means

It is amazing how cruel marathon courses can be. Like Melbourne, the course here came almost to the finish line at the 35km mark before running under the bridge and away right at the point it really starts to hurt and motivation is in short supply.

Some of the few hundred girls and boys faster than me move like grey hounds!
One poor lass was very distressed as she could not finish with her group of speedsters. Got Whip lash seeing them spring along home while I was still going out to the very nice Centennial park.

I admit to running dozens of red lights especially on Oxford st and could not help but asking the helpful police officer if the red light cameras would ping me The only traffic issue is all of our worst nightmare- A 5 or 6 year old jumped out in front of me. I am very glad I did not hurt him. Lucky I did not fall on him. It was at 30 km mark so I was in an auto pilot zone and not at my most coordinated.

The finish the opera house is cool. Getting older and faster is cool.

Thanks Sydney- Lots of nice Discos up here. and Defers and Rangies

Well done! Nice to see another marathon runner on here although I haven't done the Blackmores one. I have run the 1/2 course a number of times and love it. It's such great event.

Official time (for placings) is gun time as the winner is the first over the finish line and not necessarily the fastest runner - so all contenders get on the starting line!

Net time is your run time from start to finish line.
    Cheers

Cheers Slunnie. I assumes that but was not sure. Happy to claim the 3.26 now.
Started sooooo far back it was silly. My stats have me passing hundreds +++ of people until 35km mark. Start Line for the loos caught me by surprise . I was 40 minutes early for the start line as well.
Talking about loos, I caught some poor lady by surprise at the 2nd loo brake. 5 portaloos side by side at 30km all showing green! I reefed open the door to find it was not empty at all Wonder what was worse, hot and sweaty me looking shocked or her hot and sweaty pants down ( from her perspective as it didn't bother me)

Melbourne next, Portland, Lillydale then Wangaratta for me. Midlife crises perhaps since my first was Melbourne 11 months ago. Dreaming of a 3.15 or better time in under a month.

Good on you Diver It takes a lot of commitment to training and family support to do what you did, I envy your fitness and determination.

I think the hate issue is fairly benign and more venting than true feeling, at least I hope so, some personal attacks are disappointing, but that's the internet and unlikely if face to face

    Keep up the good work.

    Congrats

3.30 is an awesome time & I am jealous.

I think most people here (no offence intended to anyone) would really not know of the level of commitment required to train for a 42.2km run.

They would not know what "hitting the wall" is really like - who can accurately describe that any way?

I have never run a marathon myself either for that matter, the closest I have come is 41.1km - just to see if I could - that was after building distance weekend after weekend after weekend.

what a fantastic achievement - you have every right to skite about it.

    Congrats from a fellow runner.

Keep on running mate. I readily cheer on the 5 hour plus crew and love to see the impossible trying such as some real heros pushing young people with disabilities. One of my favorites is a 1/2 marathoner who was huge but just kept shuffling in pain until she got her goal. I passed her several times and was thrilled to be at her finish line cheering like a loon to see her get over.

41.1 is soo close- give it a crack. The others inspire me and pull or push me along. My mate, his wife and daughter do iron man. 180km ride, 6 km swim then a little 42.2 run. Thats off the planet for me.

It is one step at a time for each of us. How many is a personal choice.

Ironman is off the planet, but if you can run a marathon then I have absolutely no doubt that you can do it. Just break it down into chunks, a stay within your own box and suddenly it becomes achievable. It's an insane amount of training but if the fambo approve, have a crack, it will be honestly the most incredible experience, your fitness will go through the roof and it will change you as an athlete.

And I agree, the last in get the biggest cheers. They're the ones who have hurt the longest.
    Cheers

If man was designed to run we would not have invented Land Rovers!

Actually, scientifically man was specifically designed to run. We just don't anymore because we have Land Rovers. There is a really good book by Christopher McDougall called Born to Run that goes into it all.
    Cheers
