Teenage hoons hit and run

I don't accept the argument that as Parents you shouldn't be expected to know what your kid is doing 24/7. That should be your first priority. Also - the thought that you may not know that your child has / is using a bike illegally on the road sounds a nonsense to me. Who bought the bike - who buys the petrol , where's the kid spending its time and how is it getting there and back? I think the thought that the parents should have some kind of responsibility in law for the actions of the child is a good one. And like the recent thread on the idiot who ran over the Wombats - for God's sake , crush the bloody bikes when you find them on the road.

I don't think it does much good to blame the parents as no doubt when the kids mates come round they're all sweet boys and butter wouldn't melt in their mouths.
Same when they get to court, instead of looking like the toe rags they certainly are they'll be dressed up smart with shiny innocent faces which will tug the heart strings of the judge and jury.
And a slap on the wrist will be handed out with maybe a few stern words from the beak about behaviour in future. :mad:
The Cook and me were in the car park of Masters in Joondalup a week or so ago and there was suddenly very loud noises of un-silenced bikes and these were being ridden by 3 oafs of over 20 (I'd guess), at speeds of around 25-30kph all over the roads and footpaths to avoid the speed humps.... past people pushing trolleys and just generally wandering around. No regard at all for consequences.
Same thing last weekend and probably the same blokes racing through Currambine S/C car park with no regard for anyone but luckily they're so noisy you can hear them coming.
These idiots are off a building site from their clothes and I'm sure are over 20, so who do we blame for not supervising them? Foreman? Site manager? All of whom are probably from the noise they make, fully aware of what they're up to. Or the parents for not bringing them up right?
Cops told I suspect, but I wouldn't bother as there's so few on the roads except when training new recruits, that they're rarely seen and response times have fallen again from their ideal KPI.....

And that is a big part of the problem, no uniform rules.
These kids are at fault and deserve all they get.
Over her the problem is a lot of pedestrians just assume they have right away on all crossings which is not the case. The only ones over here they have right of way is on zebra crossings or lights when they are on and school crossings. The signposted ones over here they do not have right of way, but the confusion is a lot think they do and just walk out onto crossings without looking at all. Even when right of way you need to be aware of your surroundings. The poor woman involved in this case was not at fault at all, but may have been able to avoid the incident if aware of surroundings. I have always taught my kids not to just assume people are going to give way or even see you. There are often no second chances.
Obviously in all states if a pedestrian is already on the crossing or even road the vehicle must give way and a lot of people dont get that either.
I have personally had people walk straight out in front of me on a crossing where pedestrians dont have right of way in 50kmph areas. One in Pinjarra is bad for this.
Most shopping centre car parks over here are zebra crossings.
Just so sad for the family of this lady.

Rubbish, the parents need to accept a large chunk of the blame. Part of the role of being a parent is to firstly bring up your kids to respect rules and lives of others. Also to know right from wrong. To know what they are doing when under age and in your care. Too many just dont care. Children are a life long responsibility. If they are out of control then dont give them bikes etc. These kids must have known that riding these bikes where they were was illegal and unsafe.

My example was taken from the Australian Road Rules.
It seems a lot of Australian laws and rules don't make it past the WA border.

One of my pet hates,i see ladies pushing prams doing this,they don't stop and look at all.:mad:

I was taught look right,then left,then right,then go if all clear.That was many yrs ago.

Maybe there needs to be some sort of education program,starting at school.

How someone can step onto a zebra crossing without looking to see if there is any traffic coming is beyond me!

Not suggesting the woman in this sad situation looked or not,as i don't know the full details of the incident.

Not sure what the answer is, but I know fear works.EG, a few years ago, across the road from us, lived the master at arms of the Rebels MC. Brett. For a while, some young bucks used our end of the road as a race track. Brett would follow them home, note the address, & , with a couple of mates in their colours do do-nuts outside their house. When the indignant parents came out, they were told in no uncertain terms this would happen every time their little angels did it again.
Another time, we had our daughters 18th birthday at home, about 100 youngsters , all ready to party. Brett saw me, asked if he & a couple of mates could come across, as his daughter was attending. Now, just before this , there was a shooting on the Bribie Island road. A group of Rebels had an encounter with a rival mob. Brett was the shooter, and it was well known in the area. Of course I said he & his mates could come over, they turned out to be good blokes, on the night. I had some young bucks come & ask me if he was the guy who fired the shots at Bribie, Confirming that, I said " They are our security, if any of you young arseholes play up, he'll probably shoot you." [ in jest, of course]. The best behaved group of young partygoers I have seen.


Says a lot about our society that we had another party, an after party some years earlier, for our eldest sons graduation from high school. Registered it with the Police, had adults supervising, ended up a running fight with gate crashers. The Police were powerless to do much. A hell of a night. Had to break up a drunken fight in the middle of the road at 5am. I don't condone the MC 1%ers , but I do know fear works with young hoons. Unfortunately, they have no fear of the Police, or our judicial system. Bob
